Swift Walker has new fans in our house - bright, colorful illustrations and so many facts about the different continents. All the books in this series would be perfect for classroom libraries and belong on bookshelves for any kids interested in geography and natural sciences.

January 30, 2017Swift Walker is about a boy who walks so fast that when he tries to slow down he can't and walks to Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, Antarctica, South America, and North America. Then he wakes up in his bed. His adventurous walk was just a dream. Swift then realized that his dream made him recognized he did go through life too fast and that he would slow down and enjoy the sights around him.
I really enjoyed this book and the use of color through out the whole page of all the pages. I didn't see the dream part coming, but it was neat how they did that. The story was really cute and the way the facts were included about the places he traveled were really interesting. It did not even feel like you were learning new fun facts.
I would read this book out loud and maybe have the students pick where they would want to go and a fun fact they enjoyed about the place. After doing so create a poster board and present their project to the class. It could tie into a geography lesson with all the different places.

Verlyn Tarlton has created a wonderful little character, Swift Walker, who takes adventures throughout the world and into the solar system as well. In his Continental Journey, he discovers the Sahara Desert, Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti and the Nile River. His response is "Amazing, huh?" and I agree because Ms. Tarlton has included information about these places about the terrain, locations of interest, and the plant and animal life that dwells within each continent as well. At the end of Swift Walker A Continental Journey, she takes the time to give us additional information on each of the seven continents.

Each page is filled with great illustrations and a little info on each thing you see. At the end you are treated to more fun facts. Kids should enjoy the way this is written with them in mind and things they can learn just by reading and enjoying the pictures. Great fun.
