About the author
Ann M. Martin
1,150 books3,161 followersAnn Matthews Martin was born on August 12, 1955. She grew up in Princeton, New Jersey, with her parents and her younger sister, Jane. After graduating from Smith College, Ann became a teacher and then an editor of children's books. She's now a full-time writer.
Ann gets the ideas for her books from many different places. Some are based on personal experiences, while others are based on childhood memories and feelings. Many are written about contemporary problems or events. All of Ann's characters, even the members of the Baby-sitters Club, are made up. But many of her characters are based on real people. Sometimes Ann names her characters after people she knows, and other times she simply chooses names that she likes.
Ann has always enjoyed writing. Even before she was old enough to write, she would dictate stories to her mother to write down for her. Some of her favorite authors at that time were Lewis Carroll, P. L. Travers, Hugh Lofting, Astrid Lindgren, and Roald Dahl. They inspired her to become a writer herself.
Since ending the BSC series in 2000, Ann’s writing has concentrated on single novels, many of which are set in the 1960s.
After living in New York City for many years, Ann moved to the Hudson Valley in upstate New York where she now lives with her dog, Sadie, and her cats, Gussie, Willy and Woody. Her hobbies are reading, sewing, and needlework. Her favorite thing to do is to make clothes for children.

I love love love this cover. And it’s about 2 pages at the end of the book, but it’s perfect.
Karen has to ask if she’s being obnoxious in this one and I for one was stunned. Karen? Obnoxious?

While I didn't have the last two books as a young'un obsessed with the Karen books, this one I did have. And I loved it! (Who doesn't love a pizza party?) And it was still a fun read as an adult (overlooking the strangeness of what a big deal this monthly contest is. What is Pizza Express' contest budget?!) I know haters are going to complain that this book proves what a ~brat Karen is in this book, but that's the point! If someone made me a Queen for a month and gave me a crown, you'd better believe I'd be rocking that shit daily. #hatersgonnahate

I love that it took 42 books for Karen to learn the word "obnoxious." No -- I genuinely love that. Because I think it would have been really easy for the series to paint her that way with how precocious she is and how she's always scheming, but it really doesn't, and neither does the BSC main series.

July 22, 2026Karen’s Pizza Party
During announcements, Ms. Colman announces that the school’s summer repairs aren’t done. So, while each classroom is being painted, there will be some moving around. Hootie (their gunea pig)can’t tho will have to stay at one of their homes temporarily. Karen immediately volunteers. She loves animals, and already has many pets. Ms. Colman says the students must have their parents sign permission slips.
Karen asks her mother, and she agrees to sign the permission slip if she promises to be responsible. Her dad agrees they can coordinate bringing Hootie to each other’s houses. Both sets of parents are in agreement. Everyone turns in their permission slips. Ms. Colman decides topick the winner by drawing a name from a box.
After school, Karen and her friends go to Pizza Express and find out there’s a contest to choose a Pizza King or Queen. The winner gets a gold crown, to appear in ads, a tv commccial, their face on a billboard, and one thousand dollars. Karen and her friends fill out the entery forms in excitement. On Thurdsay, Karen’s name is called in class to watch Hootie. She then finds out her name was drawn, and she’s notw the new Pizza Queen.
Mr. Rush tells Karen about her new duties (photo shoots, posters, ads, a tv commercial, and public appearances). Her presents hr with a check, but when she asks for it later, her mother tells her its going in her college fund.
On Saturday, Karen goes to shoot the commercial. She dresses casually because the studio will pick her outfit. She wears the crown that she’s been wearing ever since she was choosen. She even wears it to school. Karen starts to get an ego. At school, Pamela, Natalie, and Addy ask her questions and she answers them in a “queenly” way.
Her family comes to watch her shoot the commercial. She’s sent to the filming area. First, she’s sent to hair, makeup, and costume. Her outfit is a simple school-type outfit. They let her keep the crown on. Karen has one single line: “Mmm, this is the best pizza ever!” Karen has to repeat the line 32 times, She’s excited and can’t wait to see herself on TV.
On Sunday, Karen has a photo shoot. Mr. Rush needs lots of photos for the ads. Mews[a[er, billboard, poaster and window display. Kristy, Hannie, and Nancy come with Karen to the shoot. The studio is cluttered and packed with props that are used to create different scenes. They can shoot any kind of scene in the studio. Karen loves the attention and requests apple juice for herself and Hannie and Nacy.
The scene is set up to look like a Pizza Express booth. Karen is fussed over during the shot. She starts to act entitled and asks for more ginger ale. Her dad notices and frowns but stays quiet. On the ride home, Karen tries to make Hannie sit in Nancy’s lap so she can lie down. They refuse. Her dad tells her she’s beginning to sound like a brat and needs to stop. Karen just looks “queenly” and looks out the window.
Six days later, Karen’s pictures are everywhere. There’s a giant poster of her face hanging in the window. Karen all of a sudden becomes really popular at school. Big kids stop her in the hall and comment on her crown. A girl named Pamela Harding, who’s usually Karen’s enemy, offers her stickers. A girl named Natalie asks Karen if wearing the crown makes her feel like a different person. Karen admits that it does. She says she feels like a queen. Natalie tells her she wishes she could feel that way even if it’s just for a minute. Even two first graders peek into her classroom.
But not everyone is feeling Karen. Hank says the crown makes her head look pointy. Bobby calls her “Fownhead” and asks if she can get free pizza for everyone. Karen fronts like it’s not a problem. Karen wears sunglasses in the house one day, and she tells Andrew it's because that’s what famous people do so they won’t be recognized. Andre points out that the crown is a giveaway but Karen brushes it off.
So now, Karen’s TV commercial has aired, her photos are everywhere, and there’s a giant billboard of her face. Emily has even started calling her “Big Karen”. On the way to school, Seth tells Karen to remove her sungllassses inside. She says she will, but plans to keep them on. When a third grader asks for her autograph, she fronts like she’s busy, but signs it anyway. She tells Nancy how “tiring” fame is.
Nancy and Hannie have to put her in check and tell her she’s not a movie star. Hank calls her a “billboard star”. Bobby asks her about the free pizza. She says it’ll happen “any day now”. Then Pamela says”. She admits she hasn’t asked Mr. Rush yet but it should be easy.
On Friday, Karen’s mom and Andrew come to the school to pick up Hootie. Karen tells her mom she knows what to do to take care of him. So they take him home and let him explore. Karen asks Andrew if she can have some alone time with him. She takes off her sunglasses, puts on her regular glasses, and lies on the floor with Hootie. She then introduces him to Emily Jr (her doll). But then decides they shouldn’t play together.
Karen gets a call from Pamela asking if she can get her free pizza the next day, but Karen says “not yet”. Then Bobby calls. Karen again promises she’ll come through. (Even tho she hasn’t asked Mr. Rush yet). When she talks to her moom, she tells Mr. Rush is already paying her and she can’t even ask him about getting free pizza.
Karen makes some appearances. One is to help raise money for homeless people. After Seth explains homelessness to her, she vows to help and asks a lot of people to donate. Another appearance is for a boy named Joey who has a birthday party at the Pizza Express. She gets to eat pizza, cake, and icecram, but feels awakward because she doesn’t know his friends and is relieved when the party ends.
On the way home, Kare realizes the weekend is almost over and thinks about how much she misses Nancy and Hannie. She hasn’t played with them or even called them. When she gets home, she plays with Emily Jr., Hootie, and Andrew. But she feels lonely and wonders if being the Pizza Quee is worth it. At school, the repairs to the classrooms begin. Nancy asks how long she’ll be wearing the crown, and she says one more week. She says she’ll keep wearing the sunglasses th-to practice for when she becomes a movie star-.
First they have class in the lunchroom. Then they move to the auditorium. Noone pays attention so the teacher gives them a break. Nancy suggests they put on a show. Karen says she’ll perform her television commercial. Karen performs it five times, and Pamela calls her a pst. Even Nancy agrees. Bobby reminds her that the contest is on to find a new Pizza King-which Karen doesn’t want to think about.
On Tuesday, the students have class outside. More kindergarteners recognize Karen and ask for her autograph. She performs her commercial for them, and they ask to try on her crown. When she’s done, all the others are busy playing, and Karen feels left out. She spends the afternoon with Ancy and doesn’t feel so lonely anymore.
Later, while thinking about a homework assignment, Karen realizes Hootie is missing. Karen starts to panic and starts to search everywhere. Karen thinks about telling her mom but decides not to because she told her mom watching Hootie would be no trouble. She decides not to tell anyone. She continues to search, but Hootie is nowhere to be found.
She tells her family that Rocky keeps going after Hootie. So she’ll keep her door closed. She puts a sign on her door that says “Do Not Enter”. Karen keeps waking up during the night and calling out for Hootie. In the morning tho, he’s still missing. She checks his cage again and her room. He’s not in either.
Mr. Rush shows up at Karen’s school with photographers and a reporter. They want to do an interview about the Pizza Queen contest. So, they want photos of Karen during her last days as Pizza Queen. When asked When asked their opinions about whether they like going to school with the Pizza Queen, Natalie says it was wonderful, Pamela says Karen is a pain, and Bobby says the Pizza Queen doesn’t keep her promises.
Bobby then straight up asks Mr. Rush when they’ll get the free pizza that Karen promised them. All the students then crowd him and demand to know. He just looks at them in confusion. Karen is embarrassed knowing they’ll finally know that she lied. Karen is in a hurry to get home and put the day ber and look for Hootie again. Again, when she looks around, he’s nowhere she looks. Her mom and sdad catch her looking behind the coach, but she tells them she’s playing hide and seek with Rocky. She finds a missing troll, a quarter, a poem she wrote, and her other sneaker, but no Hootie.
Mr. Rush calls Karen, and she panics, thinking he’s about to call her on her lie. Or he’ll ask her to give up her crown. Instead, he gives her a pizza party for the entire class. It will be Friday after school. Karen wastes no time bragging to everyone she got them the pizza party, and it's all because she’s the Pizza Queen (like she told them she would). But Hannie later tells Karen a lot of the kids don’t want to come to her party because she’s obnoxious. She asks Hannie if she’s obnoxious. She gently suggests she take off the sunglasses. She realizes maybe she has been a little obnious.
Karen is packing to go to “the big house”. Her mother walks in with Hootie and tells her she found him behind the refrigerator. Karen has to confess that he’s been missing since Tuesday. Her mother says she should have told her immediately. Hootie could have gotten hurt, trapped, shocked, or escaped outside. She says he probably hasn’t eaten properly in three days. Karen says that she was trying to be responsible, but her mother says the most responsible thing would have been to tell an adult. She makes Karen promise to make safer choices.
She also suggests Karen make a special meal for Hootie, and Karen makes all his favorite foods. Karen’s mom discovers Hootie’s cage is very loose. She and Karen fix the latch. Karen makes a speech to her classmates admitting she went overboard. So, they all show up at the party. A new Pizza Queen is announced. It’s Natalie. As Karen passes her the crown, she tells her”Don’t wear the crown all the time, don’t make promises you can’t keep, and try not to be obnixous.” And most importantly try to have fun.
My Thoughts
1. This was another one of those books that gave a BAD message that you should rewar kids for LYING.
2. Saying that tho, I felt like the Pizza Express contenst SHOULD have included free pizza as apart of the prize and that they didn’t made me feel like this place was cheap.
3. But then I guess they couldn’t afford it if they switched kids every MONTH which seemed like a waste to me, and I thought they should have kept the same kid for at least a year.
4. While I understood Kare’s mother wanting to save some of the money for college. I felt like she at least should have gotte a small bit. She did win it.

This entire book is based on such an unlikely presence.
A local pizza place choose a monthly winner, by raffle, to be their Pizza King or Queen. The kid films a TV commercial, has photo shoots and is on a billboard, and attends various events throughout the month, and is paid $1000. What kind of local pizza place could afford this monthly? Especially switching out all of the advertising.
Anyway, Karen is chosen as Pizza Queen and is really annoying. She also takes the class pet Hootie home for a week and loses him for three days, but her parents don't notice and it's not really that big of a deal when they find him.

Jeez Karen never seems to learn her lesson in these books and to stop showing off. In this book she is worse then ever, extremely bratty, selfish and annoying. My least favourite book in the series hands down. Plus, how does she keep winning things? And how does a multiple champion spelling bee finalist spell privit wrong 😂

Lollll Stoneybrook. I love stories like this that show us how small town Stoneybrook is. Where else would a local pizza place do a monthly Pizza King/Queen contest and have it be such a humongous deal? (OK the $1000 prize money is awesome, but they also expect a lot of work from the winner!)

Lucy has discovered the Babysitter's Club books, and it's fun reading them again myself and feeling all the nostalgia. ❤️

Karen is very, very unlikeable in this book.

Another fun book in this series. The short chapters and dual plot lines are perfect to keep the interest of my kinder.

This book was really GREAT! I really liked that she won the contest and was able to be the Pizza Queen. She got to be on the commercials and that's what I want to do some day. They treated her like a "Pop Star", she wore the crown everywhere she went. She even got to have a free pizza party for her class. I really enjoyed this book.

I think it was exciting when Karen became pizza queen of the month at the Pizza Express contest, and got to do a photoshoot for ads, a commercial, and making public appearances. This book looks at how she let the fame get to her head and how her friends couldn't stand how she was behaving. She treats them all to a pizza party in the end and all is well again, for now

When you were too old for childrens books, but too young for The Baby Sitters Club.
Ann M. Martin really is a genius to piggy back on the success of The Baby Sitters Club.
After reading the little sisters series I remember feeling like a real adult opening up that first BSC book.
