About the author

Leslie Patricelli is the American writer and illustrator of the best selling line of toddler books, starring her inimitable Baby character, including Potty, Toot, Yummy Yucky, Big Little, and Hair. She has more than 30 books for children, including her preschool books, Higher! Higher! (a Boston Globe Book Honor Award winner), Be Quiet, Mike!, Faster! Faster! and The Patterson Puppies and the Midnight Monster Party; as well as a middle-grade novel, The Rizzlerunk Club: Best Buds Under Frogs, published in 2018. Leslie Patricelli grew up in Issaquah, Washington close to Pine Lake. Leslie Patricelli majored in Communications at the University of Washington and took classes at the School of Visual Concepts in Seattle. Leslie Patricelli created and animated Rover the Dog for Windows XP help installed on more than 60 million computers worldwide.

Naked baby needs to go to bed but has a bath first. Then the goodnight ritual of kissing everybody before tiring out for the night.

From a series that Neo enjoys a great deal, this book is all about the bedtime routine of a baby. Told in rhymes, Neo is able to read along at times and I was sure we would be free from the potty humour told in his all-time favourite book by Patricelli (Toot). Alas, the mid-story 'tear off the diaper and do a naked dance' had Neo laughing and me shaking my head. More for his amusement than anything else, this book is sure to be one that Neo remembers for a long time.

If your littlest readers can't get enough of Leslie Patricelli's irresistible baby, they are in luck. This time, it's all about going to bed. Baby's nighttime routine is simple. Once dinner is finished, it's time for baby to say good-night to the sun, hello to the moon, to kick off the diaper, do a little naked dance with mom and dad, and hop in to a bath. Then, it's tooth brushy, hair brushy time, followed by a nice bedtime story and a little bedtime song, kissy kissy with mom and day, and off to sleep. After all, tomorrow's another busy day for baby. If bedtime is a problem in your house, this may just be the book your baby needs. Nighty-Night is another welcomed addition to the Patricelli oeuvre of wonderful baby board books.

Premise/plot: It is BABY's bedtime. Almost. Is this your typical bedtime routine book? Yes and no. It stars Leslie Patricelli's BABY. So it doesn't feel typical. It is DELIGHTFUL AND FUNNY. For anyone--of any age--who has spent time with this character, it's a must.

My thoughts: Board books CAN be great fun. Leslie Patricelli is GREAT at making board books fun for the entire family. The text itself is simple, and, the illustrations are bold and colorful. But the story is easy to relate to and genuinely amusing. (Loved the "bye-bye, pants" and the "naked dance" on the way to the tub.)

This was an excellent book for a toddler. The vocabulary was very small, with only a couple words per page. The pictures used supported the text and allows the child to see how the story is unfolding if they do not yet know how to read. The vocabulary also successfully targets a 0-2 age range, using phrases such as "tubby scrubby" that a toddler can understand and relate too. The end of the book also gives the child an overview of the baby's night time routine, almost acting as a summary of the story with illustrations to support it.

Perfect for toddlers!

So far, Leslie Patricelli is my favorite author for baby books. She's humorous (for parents), it's worded in a way that encourages toddlers to practice memorizing their favorite parts, and the illustrations are very colorful and inviting. My baby makes me read her book, Potty, over and over again, and after previewing this one, I am sure I have another hit on my hands!

Highlights: Easy vocabulary for little ones to learn. Teaches a simple bedtime routine with reading and cuddles.

Lowlights: Mom does the bedtime routine alone and dad gets hugs and kisses.

I, uh, do not get the appeal of the Patricelli books, but they are not for me. Emmy really likes doing a little shimmy during the "naked dance" part and knows all the beats of the routine so she is basically reading it to herself at this point.

This is one we’ve read to our littles since they were only weeks old and we still enjoy it! My four year old and two year old recite every word and delight in the simple and relatable illustrations every time.
