Shewhart brought together the disciplines of statistics, engineering, and economics in a simple but highly effective the control chart. This technique, and the principles behind it, has played a key role in economic development from the 1940's through to the present day. Most of Shewhart's professional career was spent at Western Electric as an engineer from 1918 to 1924 and at Bell Telephone Laboratories from 1925 until his retirement in 1956. In addition, he served for more than 20 years as the first editor of the Mathematical Statistics Series published by John Wiley & Sons.

Shewhart desenvolveu uma série de ferramentas analíticas para serem utilizadas no controle de qualidade, o cara é simplesmente um gênio. O Livro me deixou totalmente perdido. Na minha opinião, é necessário muito conhecimento prévio para entender alguma coisa. Ele apresenta gráficos, equações, somatórias, creio que o livro é completo. É interessante o objetivo que Shewhart perseguiu descrito no livro, como controlar a qualidade de um material em uma produção em massa? Inviável ter que checar item por item pois algumas indústrias trabalham com milhares de modelos produzidos por dia. A maneira como Shewhart utiliza da matemática para tentar sanar esse problema, apresenta a importância da engenharia e seus cálculos mais complexos.
