I am biased that I liked this volume because a new/old challenger appeared that I love so much.

But I swear in each of these volumes the kids never have their priorities straight. In this one they are worried about a hair cut? With all the mayhem that’s going on, is it really the time?

Now I am gonna watch out for more dumb misplaced priorities.

Y and the gym leaders do their best to stop Team Flare's ultimate weapon from the outside while the other kids manage to make it inside and meet the weapon's original creator, Az. This dude is 3000 years old and 15 feet tall, and that is NEVER EXPLAINED! Am I just supposed to take that at face value? Fine, then. Moving on. We hear Az's tragic tale about losing his pokemon, and trying to revive it, only to fail and take out his anger on humanity causing great destruction with his device. That was a long time ago, though (as I said 3000 years) and he now wants to help the kids fight against Team Flare's plans.

Trevor, Shauna, Tierno, and Clemont totally steal the show with their dramatic rescue. Trevor and Flabebe shore up their courage and take on Lysandre with a surprise Solar Beam, and the kids are able to remove the key from the device greatly reducing the amount of damage done by the weapon.

In the aftermath of the battle, Y befriends Xerneas, and she is given Gurkin's last key stone. Blue and Diantha are revealed to be working together and looking into the mysterious third legendary pokemon, Zygarde.

I read the book as some kids I know love Pokemon adventures but I jumped in at Vol 8 and I feel I missed a bit - however it seemed like it was fun action for young kids. I don't think it is easy for me to make further comments having lost a bit of the backstory. It seemed well-paced and engagingly drawn.

Finally Y tells X like it is—things won’t get better if you keep running away. Both characters have developed so much over the course of this series. The action was great, too. This is such a great era of Pokemon.

This series is definitely not as good as other Pokemon series. I gave it a 4 because I was feeling generous.
