(Sequel to The Scent of Metal)
After freeing the AI ship Argo from the ice of Pluto, Lea and her team race for the prison planet Beredul to free the Wiyert trapped there. The planet conceals vital information about the aliens that enslaved the Wiyert--and now threaten Earth. Little time remains to protect humanity. A handful of escaped Wiyert, desperate to rescue their people, offer to guide the team. With their help, Argo's formidable power, and Lea's unique mental abilities, they hope to penetrate Beredul's defenses without detection.

They must trek on foot for days across the war-torn surface, pursued by gigantic, nightmare predators to reach the nearest Wiyert stronghold.

And then the hard part begins. Everything on Beredul conceals a dark past...even the terrifying beasts that roam the planet. Disturbing intelligence reaches the alien civilization, triggering an investigation.

The Wiyert have learned caution through harsh experience, and something about the humans from Earth arouses their suspicions. They know too much—and do impossible things. Can the Wiyert trust them with their lives?

Trust always comes at a price, and that price may be too high to pay...

Starts off with the Wyvert becoming far more interesting and complex, but not too saturated in "local" politics. The challenges faced by our heroes are significant and well-constructed. The pacing superb, and the final 1/4 of the book is a terrific space battle full of clever world-construction and ideas.

I loved it. Her best book in a long time. I hope she continues the series.

In One Blood Sabrina Chase gives us another good space opera. This story picks up right after the events of The Scent of Metal. Lea and Argo and their mixed team of Terran humans and Wiyert journey to the planet Beredul to free the Wiyert trapped there by the Fadohl slavers. When they get there, things get complicated and the action picks up. There are mysteries to solve, local chieftains to negotiate with, and very very badass monsters to fight.
Good book. But the story isn't complete, so I give it 3.5 stars rounded up. (I will probably come back and make it a full four stars after the series is completed.)

This one didn't feel as strong as The Scent of Metal, but I overall enjoyed it. Things start a little slow with the voyage and prep for Beredul, but once they get on planet, things pick up. We also get some more info on the fadol; just enough to supply more questions than answers, and I'm very interested to see how that plays out. The epilogue is a great bumper (if this were a movie, it would be the after-credits scene). Looking forward to book 3.

Yippy! A second book in the series. I thought the first was going to be a stand alone. I'm so glad I was wrong.

Continuing the "Pluto" series, Lea, Ivars and several others travel to a planet of Neanderthals in search of help against the alien threat. Reminds me a bit of March Upcountry by Ringo and Weber, as they travel across a dangerous planet. Good characters and story, enjoyed it a lot, really looking forward to the final chapter of this trilogy.

Scent of Metal, One Blood (Argonauts of Space)

Awesome. Chase is a superb writer. I re-read her books and they are just as enjoyable as the first time.

I read the first of the series some years ago, but there was enough reminder/backstory stuff to catch me up without having to refresh myself.

I remember the first book as being very well edited; this one has a few minor glitches, mostly apostrophes and commas, but for the most part it's smooth and even, and I could relax into it without being constantly irritated by the copy editing.

It's an enjoyable ensemble-cast adventure. The "it's us humans together against the alien Other" premise rings a little old-fashioned to me, but it's far from the worst take I've seen on it, and there are plenty of hints that the Earth-humans, at least, have a slightly more sophisticated take on war than that. The military background of several of the characters came across to me as convincing (I have not served in the military, though, so take that for what it's worth). There's lots of winning hearts and minds and clever problem-solving, as well as a smaller amount of blowing stuff up, which works for me as a balance.

The characters, including the non-Earth-human ones, are easily distinguishable, and the two main characters in particular, the military leader and the suddenly-superpowered geek, have some depth and heft to them. I believed and enjoyed their strong personal relationship, too.

Extra points for a cat, as always.

It's good enough that I'll consider adding it to my Best of the Year, though not so good that it's going on that list automatically. Definitely a strong four stars, but it lacks that extra depth or something outstanding that would take it to five.

I'll read the third in the trilogy, though, for sure.

Better experience reading the book, feeling more in tune with the world setting than in the first book, it was fun reading it.
