But what happened when writers na ...more

Book received from NetGalley

While not what I originally thought it would be about, it is definitely an interesting and informative book. Reading the title you might assume it is about the history of adapting Broadway musicals for the Big Screen. It does mention that in it, but it is more about the songwriters and how they changed some of their musicals to fit the audiences who go to the movies opposed to the audience that goes to the theater. These groups at the time did seem to have a huge diff

I am a lover of older films and the stage so was very interested in this book. I knew most the musicals and songwriters he mentioned, which helped know more what he was talking aboit but even then some of the language was not what the general public would know. For instance he says " typical character or situation number" a production term that not everyone would be able to follow. That said this is a very specific book. If you lIke musicals and are interested in its history, this book should be ...more

When Broadway Went to Hollywood by Ethan Mordden is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early July.

Although Mordden brusquely discloses in his introduction that this book is only about songwriters, he does a very thorough job dissecting the songs from a handpicked set of movies made during a certain decade, critiques the movie and its place in said decade, mentions a line of two of dialogue - all in a tone that reflects the genre at that point in time (vaudevillian, backstage off-Broadway show

When Broadway went to Hollywood is an excellent book about the musical pieces that accompanied the movies that were once on Broadway. It gives you plenty of historical facts and notes about them. I for one was one of those who were uncomfortable about the bursting into song. This books gives you more to work with, to understand that there was more to the plays then Hollywood screen could ever portray, and that by not seeing these on the stage, you were missing the true beauty of the show.
