Heart Like A Starfish is quite simply the best memoir I've read in years. By turns fragile, tender, and humorous, Mr. Callaci weaves a gorgeous tale. Read this book. You'll love it.

If you are a Refrigerators or Mountain Goats (bands) fan this is a 4 star because of the many references to songs and people you love. For most readers, probably a 3-3.5 read. Great nonlinear narrative about his surviving a heart transplant. Great moments but the overall arc gets a bit lost in the meandering.

The author's heart transplant and recovery avoids gauzy sentimentality at every turn, telling the tale as the memories occur to him, with anger, frustration, humor and frequent Star Wars and Springsteen references. If this were a movie, it would be an indie production with songs by the Mountain Goats.
