Celtic Brooch #5

The Broken Brooch

Rate this book
A fish out of water love story with a twist! When a brooch is broken, some of its magic is lost...

**While this is not a time travel romance, the hero and heroine are taken out of their comfort zones and face many of the same challenges MacKlenna Family time travelers have confronted in previous brooch books.**

When NYPD detective JL O’Grady is invited to be her brother’s plus-one at Montgomery Winery's end-of-harvest gala, she plans to enjoy a fabulous weekend in Napa drinking wine, enjoying sunset dinners on the veranda, and watching her brother's high school basketball tournament. Instead, she's pulled into a murder investigation hauntingly similar to a New York City racketeering and drug case that nearly ended her career.

The local cops insist she steer clear of their investigation, but JL’s gut instincts - and fears for her brother's safety - drive her deeper into the case. With help from MacKlenna Corporation’s irresistibly handsome and charming CFO, Kevin Allen, she searches for a connection between the two cases, while at the same time her connection with Kevin rockets from mild to scorching in a New York minute.

When another crime hits too close to her heart, the stakes escalate and endanger not only JL, but the entire MacKlenna Clan as well.

Now it’s up to JL and Kevin - with a little help from David McBain, who is drowning in toddler hell - to solve the case. With time running out and danger closing in, JL and Kevin rush to discover the killer's identity before someone else is murdered, and while they're at it, they might just find what’s been missing from both their lives for far too long.

˃˃˃ Coming Next...

JL and Kevin will join bestselling author Jack Mallory in an adventure back in time to find ESPN baseball commentator Amy Spalding. The adventure will take the time travelers to New York City in the early 1900s, a time of widespread racketeering and the corrupt Tammany Hall political machine. THE DIAMOND BROOCH will be available this Christmas.

Re-reading series. ;)

Not a time-traveling book, but awesome nonetheless! It is Kevin's book and it is fantastic. I LOVED it! Onto "The Three Brooches," next in my re-read of the series. ;)

Well, another book I bought on sale at Audible, in the hopes of finding a new author to love.
This book had a few things I really dislike, mostly a main character who created a lot of angst and difficulty by lying or rather, not being honest, in the hopes of 'saving someone pain'. Ugh. It just went on and on.

Obviously, starting on book 5 of a series comes with some difficulties but I didn't have any trouble getting the gist of the magic of the brooches or the time travel. The characters bothered me and the formulaic approach to plotting. There are a lot of really high ratings for this book. I'm not sure why.

This is my first book by Katherine Lowry Logan, and starting a series at book five is usually not the best idea, but I absolutely loved it and will definitely be going back to read the series from the beginning.

JL O'Grady is a New York cop who travels to Napa to visit her younger brother, a high school basketball player with a part-time job at Montgomery Winery. The timing of her visit coincides with the death of a staff member at the vineyard, and her presence immediately puts her at odds with the local police department.

Over the course of a weekend, she gets involved in the case, uncovers a much larger plot, and find love in the form of hunky Kevin Allen, the winery company's CFO. I loved him, and although it might unfold over a short period of time, I didn't feel like their relationship fell into the annoying instalove category.

The plot twists are well thought out, and the secondary characters are wonderful - hence my need to read the other books. If you enjoy a little magic and adventure with your romance, I highly recommend this book.

This book proves that you don't need to time travel for the brooches to have the power to find your true love!! Love the way this novel solves the murder of the winery orchardist, while weaving together all the necessary elements of a captivating story - pulling together all the threads of ancestry!!! I just couldn't put it down!!!

Review for first five

While being rather formulaic, I'm began to see the reasoning behind that after the first four books. Each is an adventure of its own and I've enjoyed the research involved. At first I was a little put off by the instant "attraction" of the
protagonists, but by now it makes sense. There is, somehow, some comfort in knowing that what seems impossibly hokie will actually be enduring. Sex scenes are enjoyable but not at every turn, like some books I've read. But because of the general theme of the series, the continued attraction over the years is comforting. I'm barely keeping my head above water with all the characters involved, though. Who is where, who is paired with whom, how they got there etc. is sometimes daunting, but the occasional review is helpful. I might have a question about something that seems off, but on back checking I can usually find the information that had just been missed in my reading. Good editing, decent use of grammar, though the possessives with gerunds are often missed, a personal irk of mine. This has been a pleasantly surprising escape from the world.

Don’t bother

Disappointed in this one. A single mother detective.... not possible they live for the job they take it home and always overtime which doesn’t work with the ex being undercover n not home so who raised the kid? Not to mention as a cop she lies to her bro for over a year about one thing then there is the other bigger lie wow the integrity. Then there is the cop and yet she didn’t do any investigation say winery footage or drone footage.. questioning the guards etc then the paramedic who walked away from 4 critically injured
The bad guys cooked in a unventilated no power cave??? The smell of cooking meth? No one noticed?
The list goes on I couldn’t finish it.

Well written, as always, and very enjoyable.

The first thing that stood out to me in this book is how much detail the writer had for so many topics! She gave so much detail! Ms. Logan's writing made me think she was either an expert on the several topics or she definitely did her research.

It's probably been over a year since I read Book 4. This story did a good job of briefly recapping the relationships in the first 4. So much so, that I believe the reader could start here and make discoveries along with the main character. However, the reader will get so much more out of reading the first 4 before this one.

I love how the book wraps up with a prelude to the next story. It makes me anxious to go on to the next book. I won't be waiting another year!

Confusing

While I have enjoyed this series, I find them confusing.im not sure where this one is taking place. It mentioned the mansion on the Farmalong with the cottage where Jl is staying with Kevin. In the Emerald brooch David used the wine cave at Elliot's castle to enter the castle,it mentions that Meridith grew up here ( the California winery ). Where the hell are they? Also in the emerald Brooch Lily's name kept being interchanged with Faith. I think you need a better editor. Oh yeah when did the farm put in the vineyards? No explanations.

Although there is the connection of the brooches, all of these stories are distinctly their own, and unique. I loved Jl and Kevin's story. It shows how much Kevin has grown as a person over the years, and whatever the "divine intervention" is that brings a couple together, it manifests in different ways. This broken brooch brings JL from across the country, fortunately not decades, and the time is just right for her and Kevin, not just finding each other as soulmartes, but allowing secrets to be brought to light and releasing many characters from the burden of carrying them for so long.

Crime, mystery, romance...This book has it all!

Right up there with historical fiction is my love for crime and mystery. I loved trying to figure out what was going on and who was pulling the strings. I was surprised by some of it. I love JL and I hope she has a pivotal role in the rest of this series. She is one tough cookie! There's nothing better than a badass heroine. I can't wait to hear about her family's history.

Narrated by: Teri Schnaubelt
Series: The Celtic Brooch, Book 5 of 10

I listened to this book at 1.40 X

This one didn't really have time traveling but it all ties in to the other first 4 books.

I love how the whole series is just a little bit of a whole picture.

HOOKED ON SERIES...Keeps getting better..

I would really recommend this series for anyone that enjoys time traveling, romance, action, etc.

Vocal artist Teri Schnaubelt did another great job. So may characters and accents. 10 Stars out of 5.

I loved the first book, Ruby Brooch, but have not been as enamored with the 2nd, 3rd or 4th books. This one was great though. I loved Kevin and JL as well as the old favourites and a few new ones that I hope to see more of. This story was not a time travel one, it was all contemporary. Definitely worth the read as it was non-stop action and the romance was a really nice flavour all the way through.

While I enjoyed the mystery and suspense of the criminal activity, I was a little disappointed that this book did not have enough of the brooch and it powers in it. I will admit I don't have all the books so I went from book 1 and 2 straight to 5, so I'm sure I've missed some of the back story and that could have made the difference. I really liked the JL and Kevin story. I will probably read more, but I think I'll try to stay in order of the books.

I enjoy these books for a light read, and as the series goes on, the characters get a bit more interesting as each comes forward for their own story. There is nothing earth-shatteringly great or bad about them, thus the 3 stars. Well, 3.5 if there were half stars to show I am on the positive side of neutral.

The part I enjoyed about this book was that it focused mainly on the present time and we got to see what the family unit was like all together. The O'Grady's were introduced in this book and I love how they bring a whole new dynamic into the MacKlenna clan. And of course I love how each book ends with a new happy couple and how they make the clan bigger and better. Now on to the next adventure!

Wonderful story! Love the series!

This author is a very special writer. Each of her books is so well researched and while she uses many of the same characters, they grow and evolve in time and maturity just as real life people change. Each story also introduces new characters which just adds to the adventures. I am so happy to have discovered this very special series!

mysterious brooch

This was a very interesting treatment of the Celtic Brooches. The twists and turns of the mystery were exciting. I think this story helps to explain the complexities of tracing family members and roots. You just never know where a “new” cousin will show up. It pleases me to read of someone who is trying to gather and reconcile a family tree.

Another gorgeous surprise

I can't get enough of Katherine Lowry Logan's writing. Unpredictable. I credible attention to detail. Fantastic research woven into every book. Characters that evolve and deepen with each book. As usual, I recommend starting at book one to get the full character development.

I'm beginning to think that all of the women in this series are basically nymphos with a brain. A great murder mystery, with so much deviation into the horny cop's musings that the importance of the crime is shoved into the background. This is JL and Kevin's story, but JL is a NY cop, raising her brother, getting a divorce, who can't follow a thought without ruminating on one of Kevin's body parts or another. Kevin can't help but react. I honestly wish he had found someone else.

I enjoyed this non-time travel segment more than the previous one

A great instalment to The Celtic Brooch story, introducing the formidable O'Grady clan.
Enjoyable read, and found it alot better than the previous non-time travel story that introduced Meredith to Elliot.

I read this book as part of my Kindle Unlimited subscription (free book, but I pay for the subscription)

Enjoyed this book a lot. It was great to have all the characters from the first 4 books in this one. 2 books with no time travel, hoping the next book has us traveling back in time. Time for Jack to find his soulmate.
