About the author

Paul Findley is a former United States Representative from Illinois, representing its 20th District. A Republican, he was first elected in 1961. Findley lost his seat in 1982 to current United States Senator Dick Durbin. Findley attended Illinois College and is a member of Phi Alpha Literary Society. He is a cofounder of the Council for the National Interest, a Washington, DC advocacy group, and a board member of If Americans Knew. He resides in Jacksonville, Illinois.

Paul Findley has written one incredible, eye-opening book that calls into question the high pressure, unethical, slander tactics used against academics, religious figures, journalists and political figures who speak out against the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's overzealous involvement and desirous control of economic and military diplomacy as well as education. This is a group that nobody wants to mess around with. The power hungry citizens and 'big wigs' in this lobby have a disturbing amount of clout that really makes you look at government differently. To stand up and speak out against Israel's lobby and their very questionable dealings in national and foreign affairs is essentially to put a career/social/economic death mark on your forehead. The shady dealings that this group instigates and leads, whether it be on a large or small scale, undermines the ethics and principles for which this country and the Jewish faith stand for. This book is an education in itself. Although disturbing, because it makes the Constitution seem like a useless piece of paper with 'silly' writing on it, Findley's book is very benefical if you want to know how a facet of foreign and national policy operates.

This book was given me by an Egyptian nephrologist from the Loyola University Medical Center who was married to one of my wife's two sign language interpreters there. A liberal, poltically and religiously, Mo was justly concerned about the overweening influence of conservative Israeli interests on our domestic politics and foreign policies. This book, by a former Illinois Republican congressman, explores and criticizes this influence while adducing diverse voices in favor of a more balanced policy as regards the Middle East.

لقي هذا الكتاب شعبية ساحقة في أوساط تلاميذ المدارس بعدما تكلمت عنه شخصية (زكية الذكية) في أحد أعداد مجلة (ماجد) ذائعة الصيت حينها.
غير ذلك.. فالكتاب مثل واحداً من أوائل الأصوات المعتدلة التي واجهت اللوبي الإسرائيلي بواشنطن.

رائع وصادم، جرعة وعي هائلة

تحدث مفصلًا حول اللوبي الإسرائيلي في أميركا، ومدى تأثيره على كافة الأصعدة: البيت الأبيض، مجلسي الكونغرس والشيوخ، الإعلام والصحافة، المؤسسات والمنظمات، بل وحتى الأفراد: العرب-أميركيين وغيرهم.

بعد مئات الوقائع التي ذكرها والتي نجح فيها اللوبي وما يتبعه من منظمات من ردع أي صوت لا يتكلم بالنبرة الملائمة لهم، لكن يبقى لدي عدة أسئلة:
هل تأثير اللوبي يصل للسيطرة على قرارات الولايات المتحدة المتعلقة بـ "الشرق الأوسط" بأكملها على ممر عشرات السنين؟ أتفهم مدى الضغوطات التي تجرى على مستوى الأفراد (أعضاء كونغرس/صحفيين…) وأي أصوات فعالة، لكن هل يصل الضغط للسيطرة الكاملة تمامًا؟ هل أميركا عاجزة فعلًا أم تتظاهر بالعجز؟ هل أميركا بكل هذه الأبهة والمناعة تتحول لمجبرة ومسكينة وقليلة الحيلة أمام إسرائيل لدرجة عدم قدرتها على تقليل مساعدتها لها البالغة ٣ بلايين دولار سنويًا من حين نشأتها؟ هل تبذل أميركا كل ذلك وتضحي بموضعها أمام العالم عن طيب خاطر بلا أي مصلحة مستفادة من ذلك كله؟ ألا تشكل إسرائيل ساعدًا ممتدًا إمبرياليًا لأميركا في قلب "الشرق الأوسط"؟

"من الواضح أن عدة أمريكيين لا يشعرون أن في وسعهم التكلم بحرية عن واحدة من أشد قضايانا الراهنة تعقيداً وأكثرها تحدياً وهي النزاع العربي الإسرائيلي. أما القلة الذي تجرأوا على دخول هذا الميدان، فقد تبيّنوا أن تصورهم الذي يعتزون به للمجتمع الحر كان مجرد أوهام. وخلافاً لأية نزاعات أخرى، فإن أصحاب أحد طرفي هذا النزاع بالذات لا يتركون مجالاً للاختلاف الشريف. والجانب الوحيد الذي يمكن الدفاع عنه بدون خوف من الملاحقة هو الجانب الإسرائيلي"

الكتاب كبير نوعاً ما ومغرق بالتفاصيل.

Worth reading if you’re interested in domestic and foreign politics surrounding Israel.

As a longtime congressman and foreign affairs committee member, the author is a candid critic of the Israel lobby in America and what he calls its stranglehold on American politics. The book is chock full of examples of the appalling behavior of the lobby and Israel itself. He is one of the first congressional victims of the lobby , with his mild criticism of Israel leading to smears, intimidation, and of course an extraordinarily well funded challenger that ends his career:

Written in the 1980s, Findley is sadly prescient about where this state affairs will lead America, Israel, and the Palestinians.

He didn’t live to see Palestinian hopes of self determination realized, but should be remembered as a courageous and principled voice against Israeli atrocities. RIP

أول قراءاتي السياسية على الإطلاق…
إننا نعيش داخل خوارزمية دالتها الرئيسية تحوي حلقة غير نهائية… مع إختلاف الزعماء والمفعول بهم واحد... إخوتنا في فلسطين.
مثل هذه القراءات مهمة… فمن خلالها يمكننا أن نفهم قدرا من عقلية الرجل الغربي ونظرته إتجاهنا… وأولها أنهم لا يروننا بشرا من الأساس… ويعتقدون أننا شعب تافه… فنحن إما خارجون عن القانون أو متعاطفين مع الخارجين عن القانون.
الحقيقة أني لم أهتم كثيرا بالجزء الخاص بالمؤلف… فقد كنت أريد أن أعرف أكثر عما كان يدور فيما يخص الشرق الأوسط… وإن كان مثريا أن نرى كيف تعرض للضغط والإضطهاد بسبب مواقفه… وهذا التعرض للإضطهاد دفعه للبحث عن مدى قوة اللوبي الصهيوني.
ومن هذا المنطلق يعرض المؤلف مختلف المواقف التي توضح جليا مدى القوة والنفود التي يتمتع بها هذا اللوبي على كل مفاصل السلطة. وموقف الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية متمثلا في نواب الكونغرس وصولا لرأس الحكم فوزارتي الخارجية والدفاع... وهو مشابه تماما لما عليه الوضع اليوم…
كما وأشار المؤلف لموضوع لفلفة أي ضرر قد يسببه الكيان وأبرز مثال حادثة ليبرتي عام 1967... وصولا إلى التضييق على الأكاديميين والطلبة والصحافة مع التهمة المعلبة المتمثلة في معاداة السامية واليهود.
يوضح بعدها أن المسيحيين الإنجيليين والبروتستانت من أشد المؤيدين لدولة الكيان… ويعتبرون مناهضة الصهيونية مناهضة للسامية… فاليمين المسيحي يعد من أفضل أصدقاء الكيان.
أما الدعوة لحل الدولتين فهو يمثل المستحيل بعينه… كون اليهود الأرثدوكس المتطرفين يزعمون أن شريعتهم تحظر إشراك غير اليهود في حكم " أرض إسرائيل".
والخلاصة أن اللوبي لا يؤثر فقط على مراكز القرار بل يتجاوزها إلى مختلف مجالات الحياة الأمريكية.

As I mentioned in my review of Mearsheimer & Walt's The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy they bend over backwards about how the Israel lobby isn't a Jewish lobby, sometimes leading to unintentionally hilarious results. Around 80 % of the people in the lobby they themselves name in the book are Jewish, yet somehow we are supposed to believe that that's insignificant when that group make up roughly 2 % of the population.

Their argument is basically that because not every Jew supports the actions of the lobby, it can't be described as Jewish. An argument which is so nonsensical it can be discarded immediately. If the criteria is that everyone within the population a certain group claims to represent must support said group for it to be legitimate, then no lobby organizations would count. Even though perhaps not all gun owners support the NRA, it's still a gun lobby. (Funnily enough they later write about an "Arab lobby" without applying their own criteria).

Findley is much more frank and honest in his description of the lobby as being a Jewish one and the examples he lists are countless. And of course they don't have to register as foreign agents in accordance with FARA since they have American politicians by the balls.

It's interesting how a country's internal political process has been hijacked by a small interest group doing the bidding of another state. Ever since a corrupt neoliberal NAFTA-hugging capitalist managed to lose an election that was rigged in her favor against another corrupt neoliberal capitalist, Western politicians and their loyal lackeys in the media have screamed at the top of their lungs about Russian "meddling". Not only is the hypocrisy mind-boggling given US and European constant meddling in other countries politics, the omertá regarding Israeli meddling is absolute.

Just to give one example, Swedish public service broadcaster SVT published a clip online where a journalist set out to explain the close ties between Israel and the US. Of course it was filled with platitudes about how there are "an enormous amount of people with Jewish or Israeli background in the US, which explains the close ties not only between the two countries but also between people".

I wrote him and pointed out that Jews make up about 2 % of the US population, which can hardly be described as "an enormous amount". I asked him why he didn't mention the Israel lobby which, and this fact should be uncontroversial, is the single most important reason. Imagine trying to explain US gun legislation without mentioning the NRA. His answer was in essence "I didn't think of it".

A great addition to this book would be the the fantastic documentary series The Lobby by Al Jazeera, which didn't dare to air its second season due to American pressure. Luckily, both seasons are available on Youtube if you're truly interested in seeing what meddling actually looks like.

الكتاب ترجم إلى العربية بعنوان من يجرؤ على الكلام. وهو كتاب لسيناتور أمريكي متعاطف مع العرب يحكي فيه عن تغلغل اللوبي الصهيوني في الولايات "المتحدة. صاحب الكتاب أصداء ضخمة في العالم، شجعت المؤلف لتأليف كتاب آخر بعنوان "لا سكوت بعد اليوم.
كانت قراءتي للكتاب من باب العرفان بالجميل للمؤلف فقط! الكتاب ضخم وموغل بالتفاصيل المملة للقارئ غير المتخصص.
