I liked the way information was presented in this book. It was kind of like a guessing game. I think it would be a good book to read to children to introduce why animals have different types of skin and could inspire children to ask more questions about certain animals. I wish the illustrations were more realistic or were photographs of the animals and their skin. Instead, the pictures are cute cartoonish animals and it lacks a realistic feel. The back of the book provides more information about the animals in the book and resources to find more information. There is an index and supplemental facts. I think this book could be used as an introduction to invite children to think more about animals.

I really didn't like this book all that much which is sad because it contains exactly what I want in a book for a children's science program. In terms of length and vocabulary it is perfect for the 5-7 age group. It has a list of internet resources and I was able to glean an excellent activity from it. What pulls this book down so much, in my opinion, is the use of artistic renderings of skin and animals versus actual photos.

All of these animals are living right now and there are probably lots of opportunities to obtain pictures in a variety of ways. So why? A re-release with photos would easily up my rating by 2 stars to a total of 3 stars. It is that important.

Personal Reaction: I really enjoyed this book because it offers a creative way for students to learn about animals and their skin characteristics. I also thought that the illustrations were really cool and helped to promote the information and problem solving.

Purpose/Use in Classroom: This book would be great for students in the 1st and 2nd grade. This book can be used for a read aloud to promote a science lesson on animals and their different characteristics such as their skin. It also promote great problem solving and can facilitate good discussion and deductive reasoning for students to figure out which animal the book is describing. The book can also be used to introduce different adjectives, and a lesson on descriptive and figurative language such as imagery. It can help students learn to describe certain things in specific detail.

This is a great book about animals. Students need to infer using the words and pictures.
