About the author

Sundara Ramaswamy (1931–2005), fondly known as "Su.Ra" in literary circles, was one of the exponents of Tamil modern literature. He edited and published a literary magazine called Kalachuvadu. He wrote poetry under the penname "Pasuvayya". His novels are Oru Puliya Marathin Kathai (The Story of a Tamarind Tree), J.J Silakuripukal (J.J: Some Jottings, tr, A.R Venkadachalapathy, Katha, 2004) and Kuzhanthaikal, Penkal, Aankal (Children, Women, Men).
Ramaswamy was born on 30 May 1931, in Thazhuviya MahadevarKovil,[1] a village in Nagercoil). At 20, he began his literary career, translating Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai's Malayalam novel, Thottiyude Makan into Tamil and writing his first short story, "Muthalum Mudivum", which he published in Pudimaipithan Ninaivu Malar.

ஒன்பது சிறுகதைகளின் தொகுப்பு.

ஜன்னல் மனதை பிசையும் என்றால், ஸ்டாம்பு ஆல்பம் பரிதாபப்படவைக்கும்.
பிரசாதம் பச்சாதாபப்படவைக்கும் என்றால், வாழ்வும் வசந்தமும் நம் பழைய காதல் நினைவுகளை மீட்டெடுக்கும்.

ஜே.கே. ஒரு பேட்டியில் சொன்னது படிக்கும் வாசகர்களின் மனதில் நேர்மறையாகவோ அல்லது எதிர்மறையாகவோ ஒரு எழுத்தாளனின் படைப்பு பாதிப்பை ஏற்படுத்தவில்லையென்றால் அவ்வெழுத்து வீணே.

சு.ரா.வின் எழுத்து பாதிப்பை ஏற்படுத்தத் தவறுவதில்லை!

I heard this collection of short stories as a series of separate audiobooks in Storytel. Excellent narration by one Raaghav Ranganathan.

SuRa’s stories are good, but the conversations between his characters are almost always in formal Tamil, even when the setting is rural and the conversation takes place between youngsters. It felt odd, especially after I've recently been reading other authors who write conversations comfortably in regional Tamil slang. The difference was even more noticeable as this was audio.

A knowledgeable friend explained thus, "SuRa grew up in Kerala and learned Tamil at the age of 18. That shows."
