I give this book 3.5/5 delicious macaroons

This book is one of those few stories where the lead female character is not confident, does not feel beautiful and has low self-esteem. Not the usual, confident and beautiful leading ladies in most novels. Katherine is curvy and doesn't have abs to die for. She loves to eat, especially scrumptious and velvety soft pastry.

Katherine represents most women who are insecure about their curvy body. In this age where body shaming is as easy as batting an eyela

Received free book copy for honest review.

Katherine wants to find true love but the process of finding true love is not easy. She reaches her twenty-sixth birthday feeling insecure and feeling frustrated about her body. She is a curvy woman and she decides that she’s not going to change that for anybody.

I was very excited to start this book. The cover grabbed my attention right away. I love sweets and those macaroons look delicious. Everything about the cover is eye catching. When I saw it I c

While the first few chapters were entertaining, Sugar & Other Luxuries seemed to spiral without a destination in mind. There were huge chunks of "telling" and much of it exploring the same territory.

Similar to Bridget Jones and like Jemima J, Kath's issue is seemingly her weight and I say seemingly because while it seems to be *her* obsession, it is hers and no one else's except perhaps her frenemy, Jenna. And, it did seem that if she were so concerned with her weight, she might give a thou

Some mild spoilers!!!
This is a new author to me and it popped up as a freebie so I thought why not give it a go, seemed different from what I usually read.
This book had me giggling by the 2nd or 3rd page which set my expectations pretty high for a nice light entertaining read. It didn't really have many more lol moments but it was still an enjoyable book.
Lots of modern day issues were raised in this one, weigh issues, self-esteem, friendships, love etc!!! There where times when I cheered for Ka

With this being Everly's debut novel, I think it's great! I laughed as well as got frustrated with Kath's supposed best friend Jenna, who only seemed to think of herself as well as continually put Kath down, especially about her weight. Her new friend Hunter on the other hand... Just WOW, what a whirlwind of meddlesome! However meeting Hunter at the cooking class seemed to help jump start Kath's self esteem into the right direction. A blind date could go either way, but it seems that

Katherine is like most women in that she has parts of her body that she doesn't like. I had to laugh because I could relate to that moment when you put on your favorite pair of pants and find them tighter than expected. The author did a good job bringing the characters to life and I loved the humor sprinkled throughout. Hunter was outrageous but sensitive to notice what Jenna did not. Jenna is extremely self absorbed which makes her a pretty bad friend because she doesn't notice the struggle Kat ...more

Sugar and Other Luxuries by Everly Scott. It is a familiar tale of overcoming one's vacillation and finding love along the way. Riddled with cliché and insecurity, Katherine pledges to turn her dating life around, i.e., "make dating her bitch." Her body is beautiful and to hell with anyone that says differently. I can't argue with that, but she's a bit antagonistic and contrary as she waxes incessantly about dress size (for the record, she's a size 10), weight, and the superficiality of LA. Yes, ...more

Cranky - The Book Curmudgeon

*** 3 Cranky Stars ***

Sugar & Other Luxuries is a story about how Katherine, a 26-year-old struggling with accepting her body weight, meets the “perfect woman” who hurls her into the world of dating and helping to build her self-confidence.

The book starts off on a good foot with plenty of humor and you get to know Katherine and the people in her life. Mainly her “perfect” best friend. Katherine is successful in her life, but unfulfilled as she feels her weight holds her back in life, particu
