Broken Pieces tells the heartwrenching story of Abby, a young girl who suffers from both emotional and physical abuse at the hands of her achoholic father and spiteful grandparents. Coming from an abusive home myself, this story really hit home for me. Throughout the emotional narrative, you can feel Abby's deep pain as she struggles to move forward in life and love. This story gives an in-depth look at abuse and its lifelong effects. In short... this was a very dark and moving tale, that I woul ...more

A really heartbreaking story mainly about Abby, a young girl who suffers since young age from emotional and physical abuse, with an alcoholic father, spiteful in laws and grandparents. I found the writing style very specific, but yet the story felt so realistic and kept my interest all the way. After so many pages of ups and downs it felt good to see how the author made the closure as it gives hope and the reader really wishes for the main character to be saved a bit from the suffer that she had ...more

The story line in this book is an important one because we need to understand child abuse and how it affects a person in his or her life. However, this is so poorly written that, at times, it was unintelligible.
The author lacks skill with paragraphing, grammar, voice (it often switches from 1st to 2nd person and sometimes in the same sentence, which leaves the reader struggling to understand who is speaking about whom. The story line is poorly developed and lacks continuity. Characters are a b

Abby needs to make the right choice, but she is wavering as to which one is the best for her. A couple of men in her life harbor flashes from her previous life. It wasn’t long before this, the only thing absent from her life was a relationship with a man. She’d made for herself a good life even though her past was rocky. She had suffered bodily and mental abuse that stems from a fragmented past, due to a flawed upbringing. Her marriage fell apart and she suffered abuse and deprivation for as lon ...more

Broken Pieces just about broke my heart! I cried for poor Abby as she endured most of her life suffering from physical and emotional abuse. Seems just as her life might offer some hope and respite from the Hell she lived in, she’d find herself in another situation, desperate to escape but not knowing how. I was glad to see her finally find true love in her adult years, and come out a survivor. The author really writes with such emotion here as if she is this battered young woman is herself. I w ...more

This is a highly emotive and powerful read that had me gripped from the first page to the last. The author's expertise in drawing in the reader is admirable. I had to know what was going to happen next for Abby and her sister Megan and later their uncle Paul. The characters are relateable, the many challenges that they encounter along their journey are realistic. It is heartwrenching at times but Abby comes through with such dignity. I highly recommend this captivating read. Martha Perez is a gi ...more

This book hit home because I've heard of people experiencing what Abby, the main character goes through in life. I also know people who claim to have been abused in their childhood, both sexually & emotionally, and the subject always left me wondering how to respond. As an author myself, most of what I write about is fiction. I use my imagination to create stories versus having actually experienced what I write about. In Martha Perez' book 'Broken Pieces,' I was left to wonder how personal s ...more

A traumatic story of child neglect, family abuse and then finally hope. Abby and Megan are young and at the mercy of their family’s penchant for drinking, wandering off or simply ignoring their duties to their children. When things become frustrating for the adults they hit or simply leave for days on end.

This story was indeed a sad one, but achingly realistic and told with an unusual point of view. From first to third and then back again. At first I was unsure who was speaking and realized tha

This is the story of Abby. Her life seems to be a continuous trip through hell. Her early life is one of abuse and emotional neglect. Her birth mother she doesn't remember and her father is an alcoholic. A new step mother comes bearing so much hate for her and her sister that they are sent to live with a very strict Grandmother. Despite the drunks and abusive environment, Abby seeks love and somehow stays strong. When she "finds love" she is so happy. Unfortunately, the man is not all she though ...more

The story is great. It breaks your heart, but encourages people to overcome abuse and heartache. I did have a difficult time reading it due to all the mistakes. When I first started reading, I couldn't figure out if it was being told from Abby's point-of-view or not. I feel the book would have been better if properly edited, but I did like the story.

What if a six-year-old child could write how they really feel about their life? Scary! Exactly. All of us can relate to the fact that when we arrive into the world that we don't have a choice over our circumstances. We can't choose our parents or situations–or the country, or the time, place or century that we are born. It makes you wonder whether your fate is preordained and you're just being shuffled from here to there by Divine order. Some of us are born unto kind and loving parents while oth ...more

Meaningful story, a must read, feel what the characters feel

The entire story is shattering to say the least. For me, it was a very slow read as this book hasn't had any edits done at all. The author was informed about this need, and she also told me that English is her first language. I had planned on not being so critical of errors in each sentence had it not been her first language, but that option wasn't on the table. That said, if she has this book edited, and I receive a copy, I will adjust

Abby Pena has had a harsh life from as far back as she can remember from when she was five in the mid-1960’s. She has no knowledge of her birth mother. It is a broken life that continues to undermine Abby’s family and marriage re ...more
