A wonderful guide book for traveling through the Hopi and Navajo nations. This book has information about both the history and the people of the area. Also contains hotel and restaurant listings, maps and other resources. b&w illustrations and photos, with color photographs of Navajo rugs identified by area of origin.
Highly suggest if you are driving through the Navajo and/or Hopi Reservations or if you are just intrigued by these tribes and areas! Very educational and interesting.
I just wish it was more up to date. I didn’t realize there were newer editions because I bought this at a used book bookstore that only had the 1996 published edition (I believe the newest is 2013). So if you want to read this book, make sure you get the newest version for up to date info! I spent a lot of time googling more detailed questions and searching for an update on some places but this book shared a lot of fascinating stories, pieces of history, and details that you’d never think twice about when driving by if you didn’t know better!
In my own deep research, I found some particular details of stories to be different than what I have read, but I guess that’s just how history goes when not many people are writing it down. Perhaps the newer editions have some details switched to match what I have found in other reputable sources.
This is a very thorough and practical guide to traveling across northern Arizona and New Mexico in the Navajo and Hopi reservations. Not only does it provide need information like mileage, things to see, places to eat and sleep, but Kosik also summarizes history and culture of the area.
I owned the first edition of this book, and was happy to buy the newer one when it came out.Charnell Havens and I were working on Quincy Tahoma The Life and Legacy of a Navajo Artist and Kosik's guide traveled with us across the reservation as we did our research.
I highly recommend traveling on the Navajo and Hopi reservations and using this guide book as you go.
I got this book because my boyfriend is Dine' and we decided to explore the Navajo Reservation and visiting areas that he, nor I, had seen before using this book as a guide. It has been rewarding to learn about the different areas and landmarks pointed out along the road. Very informative and very interesting. Would recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn about the history of the area.
I read this book in preparation for our trip to the Southwest. Very interesting content and lots of ideas for places to go and things to see. This book will be most useful as we are traversing the ground it covers. It made me look forward to the trip even more!
Indispensable when traveling the Four Corner states' reservations. Truly a very complete guide for anyone who has not visited this area....and for those who have and may return ....providing information about etiquette, weather, maps, flora, fauna and much more.
