Upon becoming a first-time author, I entered the unknown and mysterious (to me) world of marketing. I had written "Chloe May, Daughter of the Dust Bowl" from my heart thinking my children, grandchildren and a few relatives and friends would enjoy the story. When my family encouraged me to publish, and a publishing company actually contracted with me, I thought I must have "arrived." Not so. I had simply signed up for some time-consuming work for which I felt unprepared. Although my publisher used one of the largest distributors of books and my book was placed with some of the best online stores, I quickly became aware that the task of promoting and selling a book, especially a first-time author's book, lies mainly with the author. But, how? AMEN, by Leon Mentzer, is a great guide for self-marketing. Mr. Mentzer helps one understand the publishing business and explains what an author can and cannot expect of a publisher. He also includes many tips for marketing a book in a professional and simple manner. Although I did not feel like all of his methods would apply to my marketing aims, his book has opened up my thinking and approach to marketing. I recommend this book to anyone wishing to better understand the publishing and marketing side of writing.

This book was full of typos, more than normal in a book. I looked up the publisher and saw it had gone out of business several years ago.
The author has a very large ego. He invites the mayor and other local dignitaries to his book signings. I'm not sure how many books he actually sells, but they must be sold mostly from his site or his car because his rankings are very low.
All that being said, there is a lot of information that could be helpful to someone just starting out in the writing/publishing field. He does a good job of covering marketing materials for instance, and who to send them to. And has some good suggestions of where/when to advertise inexpensively. I like his writing voice and he was pretty straightforward. It would be a much better book if all the typos were fixed and it was updated.
