About the author

Paul Charles William Davies AM is a British-born physicist, writer and broadcaster, currently a professor at Arizona State University as well as the Director of BEYOND: Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science. He has held previous academic appointments at the University of Cambridge, University of London, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, University of Adelaide and Macquarie University. His research interests are in the fields of cosmology, quantum field theory, and astrobiology. He has proposed that a one-way trip to Mars could be a viable option.

In 2005, he took up the chair of the SETI: Post-Detection Science and Technology Taskgroup of the International Academy of Astronautics.

Este libro es un poco extraño. Me parece a mí que al autor le sobraba espacio a partir de la página 182 y tuvo que alargar el libro por exigencias editoriales. Desde luego, esas primeras 182 páginas son de lo más grande que he leído nunca en divulgación. El mundo se presenta claro, ordenado, preciso y precioso y las teorías se suceden unas a otras siguiendo una lógica muy clara. Adoro los libros de Paul Davies. Esa mezcla de sentido del orden y ciencia es estupenda. Grandísimo libro, ya que sus últimas páginas son buenas también, a pesar de no estar relacionadas con el título de la obra.

Todo lo que cubre Paul Davies es física, física teórica y cosmología, expuesto de una manera magistral.
Pese a esto, en dos ocasiones hizo mención al "Creador". ¿Estará invocando monoteísmo o es el panteísmo de Einstein?
Sea lo que sea, si por dios se entiende gravedad cuántica, cuántica de campos o cualquier otro embrollo que al momento se torna incomprensible, pues soy creyente.
Verdaderamente uno de los libros más satisfactorios sobre el entendimiento de las 4 fuerzas fundamentales de la naturaleza.

"Warning: physics might expand your mind".
I really like this book, I've read it when I was young, and now read it again. I have understood much more now, but I have to say that even this book is intended to be for dissemination of scientific subjects to the general public, you will further enjoy if you already have a knowledge or you are eager to review some concepts (and I aim you to do so).

This is one of the best physics/cosmology books I have read. It gives a clear, balanced expostion of all the topics that have gone into modern cosmology. It is a little dated (1984) but still covers a lot of ground.

Книжка неплохая, написана достаточно интересно, хотя и несколько многословно, но уже слегка устарела. И гравитационные волны открыты и бозон Хиггса тоже нарисовался. С другой стороны струнная теория по прежнему буксует, а до теории квантовой гравитации далеко, как до горизонта наблюдаемой части Вселенной. Как-то так.
