Looks like the start of an intriguing series, The Unicorn Hunter begins with the total destruction of attorney Jack Tanner's life. After his wife dies from cancer, he dissolves into the bottle becoming a drunk and ignores his small daughter. Abigail becomes involved with an imaginary mythical creature and mysteriously dies. Jack comes out of his stupor and begins a guilt-ridden journey to find out what or who murdered his daughter. It leads him on a chase for the truth in Dublin where the history of his family supplies him with clues to a demon intent on murder.
This book was like an episode of the twilight zone, the more you read, the more you HAD to read. The ending was satisfying and I would look into the next book if there is one.

I began reading this story and could not put it down! The Unicorn Hunter is a well written tale of a man's search for answers surrounding the mysterious death of his daughter. As I read about Jack's devastating loss and his desire to learn the truth behind his daughter's death, I shared his brokenness, felt the cool dark air surrounding him, and walked with him as he traveled across the globe in search of answers. My heart raced as I followed Jack to finally confront the source of his heartache. This incredibly haunting story of a man's desperation to seek revenge for his daughter is a must read for any fantasy lover!

‘When pale death gallops by, a mortal’s time is always nigh.’
Illinois author Del Henderson has published two books to date – BLOODY FINGER and now THE UNICORN HUNTER. His fascination with science fiction, fantasy and the paranormal are well delineated in this brief but absorbing novel.
Del opens his story with a poem and then allows his main character to comment on the poem and introduce the atmosphere of the incipient tale: ‘Poetry: rarely is there something more mysterious, beautiful, or entertaining to the mind. Poems, no matter if they be dark in nature or light, are truly marvelous, for within their words they have messages of wisdom that ought to be listened to. History, of course, shows more than naught that people just read them, thinking them nice before going on to the next of the poem’s brethren, skimming through the wisdom of the past without even a pause or second glance. These words, which proud men read to impress those around them, never thinking of the meanings inside of them-these words! Wretched are the ones who are not aware of their warnings and doom is upon their brow as it was upon mine, for I too mistook their purpose and was struck by the plague called insolence. These words, which are bound in leather flesh, which men find so easy to disregard shall prove to be their salvation in the end. The warnings now to me are very clear, but in the beginning of this tale they were not and so my gloomy fate had been set. My name is Jack Tanner and I was for some time a small town lawyer in the homely state of Illinois. The life that I had carved out for my family was not a glamorous one. We had just enough income to get us by, but that was fine by us, for we were happy in each other’s company. At first there were the three of us: my wife Rachel, my daughter Abigail, and myself. That was, of course, before the cancer. It took a full year for the good Lord to call Rachel home, for she was a stubborn woman and my inspiration. To say that I took her death hard would be an understatement; for a time all that I could do was curse the world and linger on Rachel’s memories through the empty bottles of whiskey which littered the floor before the old television. To my eternal shame, there were even times that I forgot about Abigail, my only daughter, my little princess. Abigail looked very much like her mother with flowing blond hair and radiant blue eyes that could pierce even a cloudy day, and the Lord knows that I had many of them. If I was more aware of what was happening around her I could have done something; I wish…I wish that I had, but the realization of my mistakes came too late. One thing must be made clear, a warning if you will. When darkness clouds a man’s soul, it calls to dark things, evil things that thrive on these ill vibes. These creatures, if they can even be called that, will not show themselves as they feed and one is only aware of their presence when and only when they have had their fill. This said; don’t linger in the darkness of the mind for it will only bring pain.’
In one page Del has magnetized our attention and the plot he summarizes as follows – ‘After the tragic death of his daughter, Jack finds himself with more questions than answers. While reading his daughter’s diary about an imaginary unicorn called Summer, he begins to suspect that the unicorn may not be so imaginary after all. Questioning his own sanity, he soon finds himself on a desperate search to unravel the mystery of the unicorn and find what really happened to his daughter. As answers come to light, he begins to regret what he finds, as mythology meets reality and the truth about unicorns becomes known.’
Eloquent prose used to relate a tale of fantasy, imagination and humanity. This is a solid little book.

After reading the description for this book I was intrigued. The author has an easy to read style with smooth transitions. I found myself wanting to read the book straight through and not put it down. If there is a sequel or a movie it will definitely be on my must read/see list!!!

This was a great book! I thought it was going to be a children's book, but it read more like YA or adult. I didn't want to put it down!
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

What an absolutely fascinating, creepy and mysterious read!
And, it is such a unique spin on the unicorn (a dark one)! I absolutely loved it!
This is the story about a man named Jack who seeks revenge when he begins to believe that a unicorn is responsible for the death of his young daughter.
I appreciated how Jack has to follow all these really fascinating clues and you never truly know, until the bitter end, whether or not the unicorn is real.
This was such a great story about revenge but it also dealt with loss and healing.
If you enjoy a darker fantasy read, this is definitely one I recommend!

Better written than I thought it would be. Strange and dark story but he gets to Ireland, my #1 dream place to visit, and it's played up even more here. Now I want to go even more. Damn these unlikely dreams of mine.

This is a very unique perspective on what most see as a sweet, mythological creature, the unicorn. This is a brief book and the start of a new series. I’ll be honest; this one is tough for me to rate. There is a lot of good – unique story, tragic main character, great back story and some intriguing poetry and dialogue. However, the phrases and flow of the book were inconsistent for me. At times I thought the story had changed time periods as the manner of speak changes, not just in scenes but with the same character. First book in a series can be tricky as you want to pull the reader in but not give them too much. I think the author definitely caught my interest and I believe I would give the next book a try to see if he can continue to keep it.
