Can you guess what's going on behind the scenes in the topsy-turvy town of Grahnville? Turn the pages of Grahn's picture book and see how much fun it is to be fooled by his clever silhouettes.

Grahnville looks like a perfectly ordinary town. There's a school, a candy store, a barbershop, a pizzeria, and nice, neat homes. But wait until you look behind the scenes.

I have a deep love for the creative weirdness that is this book. Really teaches observation skills though since clues for "what's really going on" are cleverly alluded to in the text of the book (hint: look at the names) AND the picture of the outside of each building. Best for kindergarten and older, though if you have a really patient, small group of preschoolers, you can get them into it. A favorite of mine for pj storytime when there's an older crowd.

This guessing game book encourages readers to think outside the box as they imagine what might be going on in each building in Grahnville, USA. For instance, based on the silhouettes seen through the window of Dino’s Pizza you might think Dino and his brothers are making pizza. But when you turn the page, you’ll realize the men aren’t making pizza, they’re building a dinosaur! The text is full of wordplay (Dino’s brothers are Bronto, Stego, and Pterry) and humorous twists that will have readers ...more

things are not as they seem in this book which shows shadowy figures inside buildings that appear to be doing something obvious. the clue is on the building...for example, in the gushing springs elementary where children appear to be at their desks, raising their hands, a turn of the page shows that the drinking fountain overflowed adn they are taking rowing and swimming lessons. clever. thought my little nosy child would enjoy...and she did.

One by one we are introduced to the residents of Grahnville with a look at their residence or place of business from the outside with shadowy figures within. At first glance all looks normal; kids taking tests, candy makers pulling taffy and so forth. But each turn of the page shows things are not as they appear. Dinosaurs in the pizza parlor? Rocket ships in the candy store. The kids both have fun with this one.

My five-year-old son picked this book out from the library yesterday, and we read it tonight.

This was fun and different little book, or, as my son said, it was a "funny and crazy book". Either way, it's all good.

Rated and reviewed by Dylan, age 7:

This book is where you guess what's through the windows. You turn the page to see if you're right or not. My favorite part was the tennis one. This book was very funny.

A fun and creative guessing story for older kids. The pictures lead for unusual answers which are very goofy and fun! Reminds me of Guess Who? by Barnett and The Foggy Foggy Forest.

A unique way to guess what is going on in the buildings of Grahnville. Things are not what they appear to be!
