A picture book introduction to the history of Bach's Goldberg Variations.

Sure to make music history come to life, this book does a good job in the back of distinguishing between the parts that are 100% fact and where the author filled in the gaps. I don't know why the illustrator decided to put cherubs all over the place. It doesn't tie in with the music or the story. It was a weird decorative decision.
Best for kids ages 6 and up.

Wow, I feel really silly for including a picture book on Goodreads, but it was such a unusual find that I thought I'd review it anyway. It's about Bach, my favorite composer of all time, and how he came to write the Goldberg Variations, a particularly nuanced and complex composition, even for Bach. The CD with the ...more

What a wonderful book to introduce children to the history behind the music. This book included a CD of the Goldberg Variations, which is highly intriguing to listen to. This will suit a family well who is willing to let the facts stand and the author fill in some of the more blurry details of the story. I hope this book is one of many we can enjoy that will connect us with the Classics.

Wayyy too long and wordy for my 3-year-old but he loved listening to the CD in the car and I just abbreviated each page when I read the book.

Fun read on the history of one of Bach's famous pieces. Having the CD to listen to while reading the story and admiring the art was a plus.
Make sure to listen to the Goldberg Variations WHILE you are reading the book. It makes for a much more enjoyable experience.
Cute little story about Bach's Goldberg Variations. It's more of a read-aloud story with cartoon-like pictures.
