i was the lucky winner of a copy of this novel through a good reads win. it is a very gritty novel set in 1776 about the war of independence. it is filled with action, and the characters are very richly portrayed. the descriptions of the war, especially the hardships and deprivations the soldiers face, are very well written. there is a bit of romance too. this book brought history to life. although it is part two, it works well as a stand alone, but i will be going back to read part one because i enjoyed this one so much. syndi

These books are excellent in teaching kids and adults about the American Revolution with a great fictional tale woven within. I'm a historian of this period and the author knows his subject. My 13 year-old son loves these books as well. Gideon is a hero he can look up to and admire as brave and smart, and he has character. I hope Krenzel keeps writing these even after this series. Maybe Gideon's son and grandson could fight the War of 1812, his great grandson at the Alamo and the Mexican War, etc, etc, etc. Love the premise and the style. I wished I'd thought of it.

This is the second book in a series set during the Revolutionary War and I must say I liked the first book...I loved the second book. The author contacted me a few days ago and asked if I would like a copy for an honest review, so let's get that out of the way.

I was impressed with the detail and accuracy at which Robert manages to capture war and the internal thoughts and struggles that leaders go through. The second guessing of yourself and your actions, the doubt and disbelief....he writes it from the stand point of a man who has been there and lived it. As a Soldier myself, and a sergeant, I completely connected with Gideon as he struggles to accept the leadership roles placed upon him and upon the approval of the men he leads. Well done!

The novel is excellently written, Robert captures the battles but also expands upon Gideon's personality and character. He also digs into Ruth's character as well, expanding upon it with a delicate but strong hand. She provides a solid feminine side to Gideon and provides another level of growth for our hero. Johnson, Riddle, and Mo are great supporting characters.

The brief moments with historical figures ground the tale in reality but also add a level of depth and knowledge to the story. One moment in the book when everyone came together, I swear I was a little choked up when a certain person entered the room. The scene is painted perfectly and handled well, this can be attributed to Robert's growth as an author.

If you are a history buff, there are small nods to little details of the battle that show Robert's knowledge of the era, the people, and the customs. I applaud his expertise here and the effort he put into this novel. His love for his subject shows through and through.

If I had to say one thing about the book it would be this:
I stayed up well beyond my normal bedtime and had to force myself to stop reading. The book was that good.

I recommend this book to those who love history, coming of age, stories and anyone who enjoys a good solid adventure!

ps- Now Robert, hurry up and finish the next one!

Times That Try Men's Souls the sequel to This Glorious Cause, picks up Gideon Hawke's story as the Revolution grinds on. After the Declaration of Independence, Washington's army suffered several defeats. It takes courage and fortitude to stick to a cause in such circumstances, and Gideon Hawke shows both. As an ordinary soldier of the Revolution, full of Revolutionary zeal, Hawke also faces his own doubts and worries about the ends of this conflict. Krenzel does not romanticize war, but admirably captures the bleak reality of a miserable fight. In addition to Hawke, Krenzel's characters represent the variety of players in the Revolution, from freed slaves to German mercenaries, each with his own reason for fighting. The book is well researched, with enough details to help readers understand this crucial period of American history.
