This was the first Morton book I read, and I was deeply mesmerized. His descriptions of people, places and cultural practices are fascinating and highly readable.

Hampered slightly by an 'introductory history' full of discrepancies and false assumptions, this book becomes better because of the excerpts from Morton's travelogue 'In the Steps of the Master,' and the excellent accompanying photographs.

powerful book esp the writing and the pictures (by different author) too. the writer's encounter at the church of the sepulchre very moving.
