Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

A treasure chest of awesome, hilarious, and epic moments with the straw hat crew through some of their best story arcs! The artwork and accompanying extras are beautifully encased in a sturdy case housing all twenty three volumes. Well worth the current price if you do the math on how much these volumes cost individually. You must have eaten the "Dumb-Dumb Fruit" to pass up this amazing addition to any collection!
Funny and entertaining but definitely one of my lesser enjoyed arcs to date. The whole atmosphere of the island felt a bit off to me; like we were in a Halloween version of a beach episode. The villains and story are a bit forgettable here too.
--> Saobady arc + Amazon lily: 4.5 stars
Much more enjoyable. Sabaody island is a wonder and brought me back to the more imaginative/colorful world of One Piece. The introduction of the worst generation, the racial politics with the Celestial dragons and the Straw hats' first defeat were all great fuel for the story.
The Amazon Lily part was a fun romp too!
--> Impel down: 5+ stars
Absolutely loved it. The kamas, the return of a lot of old ennemies (Crocodile *x*), the weirdly nice character of Magellan and, of course, Bon Chan (!!!), all made for an epic arc!
--> Marineford: 3 stars
While this is many people's favorite, this one ended up a personal disappointment. While it was an epic battle of powers, the general lack of strategy of Whitebeard who seemingly came totally unprepared, coupled with the ultimate decision of Ace made for a terribly frustrating arc.
--> Post marineford (+ Luffy childhood arc): 4 stars
While I didn't care much for Luffy's childhood, 4 stars for the 3D2Y and the blood-pumping epic return to Sabaody which was truly a new romance dawn that brought me back to the first entry on the Grand Line, with a promise of new incredible adventures to come!
--> Fishman island: 4.5 stars
While the plot itself did not appeal to me that much, the themes here were absolutely top tier. The whole story about Fisher, breaking the cycle of hatred and racism was handled beautifully. The prophecy and reveal about Poseidon and Joyboy were also intriguing and gteat.
--> Punk hazard: 4.5 stars
Quite fun. Especially loved Law (*o*) and Vergo. Also cranks up the excitement for the Dressrossa arc!
My favorite fictional series of any medium of all time. It's really sad that manga has a stigma, because I think everyone should read this. Great plot, great story structure, fantastic, compelling characters, stellar worldbuilding, and the values presented are so meaningful. I can't build this up enough. There aren't many things that surpass Harry Potter for me, but One Piece has managed to. I love it dearly, and I can not recommend it enough.
(Read on Shonen Jump app—I don’t actually own this box set)
Slow and steady but I’m loving going through One Piece! Reading it (in addition to watching it) is fun because the anime fleshes things out (sometimes too much but alas), while the manga runs through the story at a brisk pace, features often excellent artwork, and includes the fun question corners and “cover stories” that add extra layers to the main story and fills in the blanks on the whereabouts of minor players that are often coming back in the main story eventually. Here’s my arc by arc breakdown for this set of stories:
Thriller Bark 8/10 - I always love me some spooky vibes and for the most part this didn’t disappoint. We’re introduced here to Brook, who brings along with some great music, important lore, good motivation, and a couple gag that I probably think are funnier than they actually are. Also love Luffy grooming out at the start of this arc. Great fights for Ussop and Zoro, and a strong character moment for Nami. The arcs not perfect though—supporting villain Absalom has to be the series’ worst character due to his creepiness being used as a gag, and how he drags Sanji a bit too far into creep territory with him. Gecko Moria is an ok villain—I think his backstory of being a washed up pirate who crawled back here from the New World is an important set up for some themes, but he’s kinda dumb looking and not very intimidating, especially for the length of the arc. That Zoro moment at the end though…damn
Sabaody 9/10 - Now this arc slaps. Lots of great stuff going on here. Love the return of Hachi and Nami’s forgiveness of him—forgiveness isn’t the biggest theme of this manga but it does feel like a decent b theme sometimes. The reveal on the character Duvall is a great gag. The supernovas are cool of course. But oh man, the introduction of Rayleigh and Luffy’s attack in the celestial dragon, even knowing the consequence? That hit different. Good balance between fun and heavy, and between action and lore/world building this arc
Amazon Lily 7/10 - Overall a fun romp but not my favorite. I think I overall like Boa Hancock, even if she gets a little annoying later on. Seeing where the other Straw Hats landed was cool too.
Impel Down 8/10 - Now this was a lot of fun, and the prison design itself was very creative, so props to Oda. I mentioned forgiveness being a bit of a B theme, but here I really enjoyed that Luffy could team up with so many of his former villains, without it being a redemption thing. And of course Bon Clay coming back and the stuff with Ivankov was great. Makes sense to have a prison break arc in a story that’s primarily about freedom and found family/friendship but the Ivankov stuff was a nice touch as far as those themes go.
Marineford 10/10 - And this one’s a doozy. A full out war is cool but Oda didn’t need to go as hard as he did. Didn’t expect Whitebeard to be this cool of a character but I’m glad he is. Seeing everyone rally behind such a weak character like Luffy really underlines how Oda approaches the ‘chosen one’ trope as more than just a bloodline/chosen at birth way, but rather because of the characters heart and the choices he makes inspires this around him to help him achieve “destiny”. Back to the found family stuff, Whitebeards arc is phenomenal, and that Buggy gag is great! Heartbreaking ending, this hit
Post-War: 8/10 - The Luffy flashback is ok. Super obvious that Sabo was introduced to be resurrected later but oh well. I more love the present day stuff. Garps return home is tragic. The set up for the changes coming are epic. And the 3D2Y stuff?? Damn.
Return to Sabaody 7/10 - Short arc, kinda cool to see the power ups. Nothing super special though but it didn’t need to be.
Fishman Island 8/10 - A bit too long I guess for the weak villain it features, but the exploration of themes of racism and overcoming it (another big overall theme) is phenomenal. And the lore building? Some of the best/most important yet. Jimbei’s flashback was excellent. And I guess it’s cool how they handle the power ups and don’t send us straight into the Straw Hats being challenged again.
Punk Hazard 7/10 - Due to its length, the mediocrity of villain Caesar Clown, and how slow the middle act is, this is probably the weakest arc in the series, or at least since the beginning. But I do like some things a lot. The children stuff is mostly annoying, but the character of Mocha is heart wrenching. The focus on Law, especially his fight with Vergo, is great. And the alliance-forming scene is top tier One Piece.
Overall excellent series that I look forward to continuing
Fantastic series and it really rewards those who stuck with it all of the way. I also appreciate that the power ups the main protagonists receive make complete sense within the context of the story. Unlike Dragon Ball Z where sometimes Goku pulls a power up out of nowhere, these heroes achieve higher strengths through training and hard work. I also like that the stronger villains make sense as well. If you need a big reason to give this series a chance I recommend Super Eye Patch Wolf’s video on jt. He sold me on the series and I never looked back since.
The amount that I cried throughout the Marineford arc is just crazy!! So many emotions!!
Oda is a genius in the way he executed the entirety of the Sabaody to Post Marineford was just flawless. Definitely my favourite saga by a long shot(and I though nothing will top water 7 saga😂). This whole story just keeps getting better whenever you think that Oda can't top this(but he always does!!)
So many important discussions were broughts up from social to familial, and I loved every second of it!!!
I love this crew, this story, and this author with all of my heart!!
