There was nothing and then Shale was born into a new world, one that is filled with death and sorrow. Shale is a Mort-doll, a creature created from body parts of the dead. He was made for one purpose, to protect the humans from the beasts and demons that infest the city and feast on the living.

But the people that created him don't know how they infuse dead flesh with a mind and Morts can't die, they can only go insane. He learns this from a woman who has taken him under her wing, but for a price. Together they travel the city, finding new terrors around most corners.

Perhaps insanity would be a better existence than the horrors he must come to terms with.

A story of 15,000 words.
