Charleston Earthquake #1
Shattered Memories
The Charleston earthquake has left destruction like nothing Doctor Andrew Warwick has ever seen. On a desperate mission to find the lady who owns his heart, he frantically searches through the rubble, where he finds her injured and lifeless. After she regains consciousness, the doctor’s hopes are quickly dashed as he realizes she doesn’t remember him. Things only get worse when he discovers she believes she’s still engaged to the abusive scoundrel, Lloyd Pratt. Now Drew is on a race with the wedding clock to either help her remember or win her heart again before she marries the wrong man.
Waking in a makeshift hospital, Olivia Macqueen finds herself recovering from a head injury. With amnesia stealing a year of her memories, she has trouble discerning between lies and truth. When her memories start returning in bits and pieces, she must keep up the charade of amnesia until she can find out the truth behind the embezzlement of her family’s business while evading the danger lurking around her.

Debbie Lynne Costello has written a very good book about the Charleston, SC earthquake in the nineteenth century. I am just tickled that Debbie Lynne lives in my hometown. It's super to get to meet and talk to an author! Especially a Christian author.
Debbie Lynne's first book, a Scottish medieval, figures into this one in a small way. That one was my all time favorite, because the medieval time period is my favorite.
I recommend this book. Debbie's heart shines through.
* I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my review. My opinions are my own.

As this author was new to me, I had no idea what kind of book to expect. After reading the first chapter, I knew that I was in for some fantastic reading!! It took only that to convince me that Debbie is an author to watch for future creations! This book is the first in a series, entitled, "Charleston Earthquake Series". I can hardly wait for Book Two!!
"Shattered Memories" is a descriptive, extraordinary tale filled with mystery, intrigue and romance. You are quickly immersed in the vivid scene of an earthquake, one which is easily pictured in your mind. The devastation becomes very real as you walk along side the characters.
The characters are so realistically described that they become part of the reader's world. Olivia worked her way into my heart and soul as I traveled with her on her journey. How would it feel to have lost everything??? Family, friends, home AND memories... ALL gone!!! A whole year of memories, gone in an instant!! The confusion and emotions were felt deep within me. It has been a long time since I have read a story that made such an impact on me. Deep feelings of empathy surrounded me for this very dear young lady. Andrew Warwick won me over from the first moment. He was such a kind, considerate, charming man, who had only good thoughts for Olivia. On the other hand, Lloyd Pratt rattled me!! The feelings of disgust and dislike overcame me as I wanted to jump into the story to save Olivia. He was a horrible villain who did a good job of pretending to be a gentleman, but what he failed in doing, was presenting himself that same way to the other characters. I have to admit, I experienced some pretty deep feelings of hatred toward him!! Not a Christian attitude, however, he just riled me to no end!
The plot was fast moving and captivating from start to finish. There were so many shocking twists and turns that I was kept on the edge of my seat, wondering what complication or tragedy would hit next. I must say, I have never been a fan of historical fiction but this book changed my thoughts! I absolutely loved it. The world passed me by as I became part of the story.
The theme of trusting God in all times, good and bad, clearly shines through. The truth will win if we let Him carry out His plans in His time.
Now, I find myself extremely impatiently waiting for Debbie's next book!!
Don't miss this book!! A five star!!

Shattered Memories #1 Charleston Earthquake***** by Debbie Lynne Costello
1886 Charleston, South Carolina....I was captivated by this story from the first page and it only got better as I turned each page. I stayed up way past my normal bedtime to finish just one more chapter as I did not want to put it down. The characters are real-to-life and we see the difference in their everyday lives before and after the earthquake. There is joy and sadness in the story—often had me in tears, happy and sad tears—it felt as if I was right there among the characters. Even with the destruction and all that will be needed to clean up and start over, there is laughter and humorous moments that had me laughing out loud.
I love how Dr. Andrew—Drew Warwick does everything to find his beloved under the ruins of her home. He is very patient with her, especially after it is evident she has lost her memory. Will her memory return? His faith is strong and he relies on God, although at times he questions. I enjoyed his family, their dedication to each other, their community and God. I could see where Drew got much of his character from.
I love the courage Olivia Macqueen shows when she realizes her memory is gone. The struggle she has with trying to remember and questions regarding what has happened to her parents and brother? Her puzzlement as to why Dr. Warwick is so caring. I hoped she would soon recover her memory—all of it.
There is one character who had evil intentions, embezzler and dangerous. I wanted to tell those who he was “after” to watch their backs.
A note from the author in the back of the book shares of her research of the Charleston earthquake of 1886. As a result, Shattered Memories was “born”. Her vivid descriptions of the area before and after the earthquake gives realism to what the characters faced. Their tragedies, heartache, joys, laughter, romance, love, forgiveness, suspense, danger and faith that will capture the reader and take them back to 1886. I enjoyed this book and look forward reading the next book in the series.

"Shattered Memories" by Debbie Lynn Costello is the first in the (Charleston Earthquake Series). I can hardly wait for Book Two! I was hooked from the first chapter and wanted to finish the book in a hurry and then when I was done I wanted to read more.
"Shattered Memories" is a story filled with mystery and romance. The scenes are described so very well that the reader can see the destruction and the action in their mind's eye. But, at the same time they are not over powering with useless information.
This book is based on the real Charleston earthquake that happened in 1886.
If you want to know more about what "Shattered Memories" is about read the above description but I want to share with you what I think about the book.
Like I stated in the first sentence of this review I was hooked at the beginning and there were moments I wanted to literally cry. Yes, the book has sad parts but that is what makes this book great! Yes, there were moments that made me want to laugh aloud. There were also times I wanted to warn the characters to be aware, danger is coming!
I wanted to jump in the pages and give most of the characters a hug and tell them it was going to be ok.
This is a story of forgiveness and love at it's best.
I encourage you to read "Shattered Memories" and learn how a community and families help others when a tragic happens.
Yes, this is also a clean love story but you don't know if love is going to win or not till the end of the story. No, I am not going to tell you the answer, if you want to know "read the story".
There is a little violence in the story with fighting and hurting of women and guns are involved in the story but nothing that would cause readers to be leery of reading this book.
I am giving "Shattered Memories" five stars.
I was given a copy of "Shattered Memories" by the author and Celebrate Lit for a honest review. These opinions are my own.

"Confusion still filled her - all of her thoughts and memories were more like a puzzle. What she remembered somehow seemed blurred by what she'd forgotten."
Olivia Macqueen cannot remember the last year of her life. Remaining unconscious for days after being pulled from the rubble of her Charleston, South Carolina home, she struggles to discern fact from fiction when two men claim to be her intended. The handsome doctor, Andrew Warwick, stirs her from within, but it's the charming Lloyd Pratt whose memories rise to the surface. The earthquake that leveled her beloved home town has managed to demolish her heart.
Drew Warwick is determined to convince Olivia that Lloyd Pratt is the worst kind of rake. Why doesn't Olivia remember the physical abuse that landed her in his office; the man's behavior was inexcusable. When Lloyd discovers Olivia's amnesia, he takes every advantage of the situation, including besmirching Drew's reputation and finding ways to spend an inordinate amount of time with Olivia. His father's advice rings true, he can't force her to love him again. His need to be in control will not save his future, for "Olivia is not a mission or an undertaking. She is a woman with feelings."
A truly enjoyable story sprinkled with great Charleston history!
I was gifted with a copy of this book from the author. The opinions stated above are entirely my own.

By: Debbie Lynne Costello
Oh My Goodness, what a heartwarming story Costello has weaved for us. Shattered Memories , The Charleston Earthquake Series. I read Costello’s first novel , Sword of Forgiveness and it was wonderful I thought she could not get any better, but she has just done it. Be prepared when you start reading Shattered Memories to not want to put it down till you finish it . Reading Shattered Memories was like slipping back in time, I got swept away back into time of the Charleston earthquake 1886. It felt like I was right there with the people as they lost everything, and their suffering they went through., I love the two main characters Olivia and Dr. Andrew ( Drew ). I love how kind Drew was to Olivia after the earthquake . Olivia lost her memory and she is living with guilt, all her family is missing. Olivia does not trust Drew or God. Can Drew help Olivia ? Will she find her family? Be sure and get you a copy of Shattered Memories , a story you will not forget.

Love after destruction, destroyed memories, earth-shaking secrets, and that is just the first few chapters! Olivia awakens in the midst of rubble, her life forever altered, but some people aren't what they seem or how she remembers them. Life is confusing and the pieces don't fit together. Olivia will have to live through worse than the rubble of a destroyed home before she can puzzle together the details of her life before it is too late!
There were points in this novel that I just wanted to scream because the main characters are so stubborn. They are definitely not cookie cutter and, like real life, they sometimes take longer to figure things out than we want. But, in that longing for them to see what we do, as a reader, we find out even more about the characters and their inner struggles.
I received this book from the author and the Celebrate Lit blog tour team for my honest review. It in no way guarantees a positive.

What a great start to a new series! What happens when you’ve lost everything, including a year of your memories? And what if you’re torn between trusting an old family friend and a man believed to be in love with you? That’s exactly the predicament Olivia finds herself in when she wakes up after being injured in the Charleston earthquake. Drew, a doctor, is relieved when his fiancé finally wakes up, but soon realizes that she not only doesn’t remember being in love with him, but fully believes she’s engaged to another man, and a true scoundrel at that. How can he convince her that he’s the man she loves, especially when the other lathers on the charm? Things get especially complicated with her brother missing, and evidence of foul play found in her family’s company. Add to that, Olivia’s memories slowly return, and sporadically, leaving her to wonder who, if anyone, she can trust. Can these two learn to work through the difficulties and trust each other, especially when the trust is shattered? I have to say, I loved watching the sparks fly between the two of them! Their banter is enjoyable, along with watching Drew work to win back his love. Although there were moments where I wanted to knock some sense into both of the characters, to me that was part of their charm. Add to that the mystery surrounding her family’s business, and her missing brother, and this story is certainly a fun one to read. And the backdrop of the earthquake, written with amazing detail, really helps round this story out. It is certainly a story I recommend for anyone looking for a good romance and a message about learning to trust God and His plan.

Shattered Memories, by Debbie Lynne Costello, was captivating from the synopsis by enjoying historical fiction. I was in the moment with the Macqueen family as they discussed their family business and the embezzlement that had occurred by Lloyd Pratt, former employee of Mr. MacQueen and fiancée to Olivia MacQueen. The next evening an earthquake hit Charleston, South Carolina with lives loss and severe damage to the city.
Ms. Costello has written this inspirational romance story with the actual history from 1886 and the devastation Charleston, S.C suffered from the earthquake and tremors that followed. Dr. Andrew Warrick went to the MacQueen home and found the home had been leveled with Mr. and Mrs. MacQueen lifeless, Olivia unconscious and Simon, her brother, nowhere in the rubble. Olivia awakes under the watchful care of the three Warrick physicians in their home; however, Olivia does not recall the past year of her life where she had been dating Andrew. Will Drew Warrick be able to win her back or will Olivia be overcome with Lloyd Pratt’s insistence of marrying quickly? How will Olivia react when she learns of her parents’ death and unknown whereabouts of Simon?
There are so many twists and turns woven into this historical inspirational fiction I did not want to put the book down—but life’s obligations did not allow that. Needless to say, I read every moment till I completed this fantastic book. I loved the underlying message of God is in control along with faith to accept His leading. I look forward to reading the next book in the Charleston Earthquake Series, by Debbie Lynne Costello.

Shattered Memories by Debbie Lynn Costello is about the aftermath of the great Earthquake that took place on August 30, 1886 in Charleston, South Carolina.
Dr. Drew Warwick is happliy contemplating proposing to Olivia Maqueen, who he has been courting for the past year. Then a great earthquake happens. He and his brother, William, also a doctor, set out for Livvy’s house only to find her parents dead and Livvy buried under debris but still alive. She wakes at the infirmary set up in the Warwick house, but her muddled mind doesn’t remember the last year or Dr. Andrew Warwick. With memories just out of her grasp she thinks she is still engaged to Lloyd Pratt, a disreputable employee of her father’s insurance firm. Will she remember important facts before it is too late? Danger lurks around every corner with essential clues out of reach that woukd unlock the maddening puzzle that refuses to be solved. Doubts creep in. Has she lost her faih along with her memory?
Debbie Lynn Costello makes the earthquake and the aftermath seem very real. She has come up with a plausible scenario and executes it very well. You can feel the helplessness and confusion od a young woman who wants to remember but the facts just aren’t there. The people who love her are at a loss to try to help her without closing off those memories forever. The author portrays the Warwick family as having patience and a close walk with God. Olivia grows in her faith and learns to trust in God for the answers.
I recommend this book for fans of historical Christian Fiction.

Via 'Shattered Memories' get ready to travel on an exciting journey to Charleston, SC, in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake of 1886. Ms. Costello has written an angsty romance with diverse characters—some charming, some nefarious, and some charming AND nefarious!
Olivia Macqueen was a confusing heroine to me. Perhaps because the poor beauty was so confused herself, having lost her memory from an injury sustained during the earthquake. She seemed so spoiled and unkind at times that I really didn't like her at first. It wasn't until I discovered her strengths and the inner battles she fought in her spiritual life, that I slowly grew to love her. Then there's the hunky Dr. Drew Warwick and the equally hunky Lloyd Pratt, who's evil to the core. Both claim to adore Olivia, but she is unable to remember which one she really loves. What a terrible predicament to be in—unable to discern between lies and the truth!
I knew nothing about the earthquake in Charleston and I was fascinated by the details that the author so painstakingly researched. I realized something was missing for me in this novel, but it did not take away from the fantastic storyline. I would've liked to have read more descriptive imagery of the rich beauty and historical architecture of Charleston and the beautiful waterfront of the Battery. Nonetheless 'Shattered Memories' is an excellent faith-filled, page-turner I highly recommend!

Shattered Memories is one of those books that has such an interesting premise - a catastrophic historical earthquake (and being in NZ that’s something we know all about) a case of amnesia where our heroine has lost a year of memories and a nefarious ex fiancé who immediately takes advantage of the memory loss to reinsert himself into the picture.
Olivia Macqueen should be basking in the new love that has come into her life with Dr Andrew “Drew” Warwick after her former fiancé abuses her and appears to be complicit in an embezzlement scandal at her father’s insurance company. But following the devastating earthquake and the tragic loss of those dear to Olivia, she has few to turn to and with a missing year of memories, isn’t sure just who can be trusted.
The story quickly grabs the reader and keeps interest and adrenaline hight as we live in fear that Olivia will give into Lloyd’s demands and marry him quickly as he appears to offer her protection and a home, all the while trying to convince her that Drew is the bad guy in all of this and he shouldn’t be trusted.
A great foundation for hopefully and exciting series about a time little know about and I hope we see more of the Warwick brother’s in subsequent tales.

This book had my attention right away! I always say you know it's a good story, by an excellent author, when you can envision the story playing out in front of you as you read. This is a heartwarming tale and I loved how the author ties in another one of her stories into the lives of these characters. The love story between Drew and Olivia makes your heart break and leap for joy all over a few chapters. Drew’s unconditional love for Olivia really speaks to the love Christ has for us and His willingness to wait for us as we find our way into His arms. All the characters captured my heart and made me feel a personal connection to them all. They were well thought out and had personality traits that complimented their parts in the story. There was mystery, tragedy, and romance all in between the covers. The climax of the book was well worth the wait. This book is the perfect read for any day, especially for rainy days where you have time to fall into the hopes, dreams, and lives of these characters. I look forward to reading more in this series and from this author!

Shattered Memories kept me engaged from the first chapter. The author's descriptions of the city of Charleston after the quake and how the citizens handled the aftermath made me feel as though I was experiencing it with them. The historical aspect of the story made it come alive.
I loved the character of Olivia and her courage to hang on to hope even though the amnesia clouded her judgment. Andrew was compassionate and loving in spite of feeling the love of his life drifting away from him. There were a lot of tense moments between them which created anticipation of what would happen next and kept the suspense going.
Lloyd, on the other hand, was cunning, underhanded, and went to no end to get what he wanted. The perfect villain.
There are beautiful lessons in God's love entwined throughout the pages of the story that make the reader stop and ponder over them. The unfolding love story weaved within the pages in spite of a lot of deceptions, brings forth a wonderful ending that wraps up nicely.
I received the book as a gift and voluntarily choose to review it.

Chills and Thrills
I absolutely loved this book! After reading Sword of Forgiveness, I couldn't wait for Debbie Lynne to write another book. Now that she has, I am tickled pink! Once life finally allowed me to sit down and read Shattered Memories, I couldn't put it down. Being in an earthquake myself, I was totally enthralled by this story. Debbie Lynne has done a fantastic job recreating a time in history and weaving a story that captures the fears and faith of those who experienced this terrible disaster. I love Drew and Olivia's story....a tale of hope, loss, fear, faith and love. One last thing....the Epilogue gave me chills. (in a good way)
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. I was under no obligation to give a positive review.

I really enjoyed this book. I had no idea there was such a severe earthquake in Charleston, South Carolina ever!! Having been in earthquakes in Southern California in the 60's and then again in the 70's, reading Debbie Lynne's words brought back all those feelings of fear and helplessness I experienced. I can't imaging waking up to find I had lost a year of my life. Moving through the recovery process with Olivia was so well written, I felt as though I experienced it myself. Well written and includes a bit of a mystery as well. Highly recommend this book. I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

What a descriptive story.. Earthquakes, the devastation, the loss of life and the people who help in the aftermath! I liked how this family of Doctors practiced not only their profession but their faith.. It was a historical book, a family's story of friends, enemies, so full of intrigue and mystery. When Olivia lost her memory during the earthquake and doesn't remember which of the handsome young men is, was, could be her fiance?? The story takes us down some mysterious paths! If you like history, mystery and romance.. You will love this story!
My opinion.. It's going on my favorites list!
I was gifted a copy by the author to review..

Earthquake!! Dust fills the air, moans can be heard when the screaming dies down, buildings are flattened and panic rises. Olivia cries out for her parents and brother, only to sink once again into unconsciousness. Waking after a number of days, she is missing a year in her memories. A less than ideal fiancé, that had been sent packing, is suddenly in the picture again. The family caring for her obviously was more important to her than she remembers. Is her family gone or will they be found alive? And how does an ancestral wedding book, with its first entry in 1398, fit into the story? An incredible story that is hard to put down until you have finished!

This was my first book by Debbie and I am now a fan and look forward to reading book two in this series. I found the Characters to be real and believable, as their problems were not solved in the blink of an eye. I loved the historical aspect of the earthquake and how it was so descriptive that you felt like you were there without it overtaking the story. It is a story of faith, love, trust, mystery, and real life issues. At times you want to shake Olivia and help her remember what a worthless man Lloyd is, but this is just an an example that all things come to fruition in God's time.
I won this book and am so happy I did. I sent it home with my sister in TN so she could enjoy it.

February 19, 2016 Debbie Lynn Costello has written a beautiful work of historical fiction. It feels like I was really there with the characters experiencing the earthquake. Olivia captured my heart and had me longing to make everything right for her as her world was turned upside down. This book kept me on the edge of my seat and I can hardly wait to read the next book in the series.
I rate this book 5 stars and highly recommend it to readers.

I found this author because of the title and the setting---the 1886 earthquake in Charleston. She places interesting characters with past secrets and relationships into a very difficult, tragic natural disaster. The history of Charleston and the era after the Civil War in the South reveals intriguing aspects of life in the late 19th century. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Love, Tragedy, & Suspense!
I really enjoyed reading this book! Once I started, I couldn't put it down. There was a wonderful love story. Sadly, Olivia couldn't remember it. I can't imagine losing a year of my memories. Drew was so very patient and protective of her. There were times he foolishly put himself in danger. I actually told him, out loud, not to do something but like most fictional characters, he didn't listen.
I enjoyed the suspense elements too. The author writes a real slimeball, evil character.
While there is tragic loss with the earthquake, there are some wonderful moments of help and healing.
I liked that the elder Dr. Warwick has to remind his son and fellow doctor, Drew, that he cannot be in control of every single thing. He must give things fully to God and accept the outcome.

An earthquake in Charleston in the year 1886 brings life to a tragic point as buildings crumble on their inhabitants. Prior to the events Olivia, who had left a abusive fiancee, and was courting Drew was living a pleasant life. As the earthquake happens, her home is devastated. As she wakes from unconsciousness days later, she has lost a year of memories, including those of Drew.
As a result of her injuries, she still regards her former fiancee as the man in her life. He finds this as an opportunity to again find his way back into her life. Drew patiently waits as he hopes her memories of him will come back. But her former fiancee looks to push for a quick marriage.
This book is suspenseful and keeps your attention as you quickly turn the pages to see what is going to happen!

Shattered Memories begins with the Charleston, South Carolina earthquakes in 1886! Doctor Drew Warwick and Olivia Macqueen are excellent main characters. The two were courting before the earthquake where Olivia receives a head injury and temporary loss of memories including their relationship. Debbie Lynne Costello has woven an exciting tale of suspense and romance amid the tragedy. I recommend Shattered Memories to others who enjoy historical fiction. I won a copy of Shattered Memories in a Heroes, Heroines and History giveaway. This is my honest opinion.

To describe this book in words I would have to write a whole book.
I was hooked 5 pages in to the book. If it wasn’t for something called sleep then I would have probably finished in one day.
Debbie Costello is such a sweet lady and have learn now that she is an amazing author!
If you haven’t read this book yet what in the world are you waiting for?
Get ready to go on a fun adventure!
I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read book 2 and so many more of her books!

Out of chaos comes a story of love that knows no bounds--the love of God for His children and the love of one person for another. This is a wonderful, but heart-wrenching story, full of suspense and angst, set in Charleston at the time of the 1886 earthquake. If you like historical fiction, you will not be disappointed with Shattered Memories.

This was a very interesting story. It compelled me to research the Charleston earthquake. I can't imagine living through something so frightening or being a physician during the chaos. I was grateful for the examples of a God serving life and love that Drew and Olivia shared.
