I came at this book knowing its author’s reputation as a leadership ‘guru’ and thought it worth reading. It was surprisingly easy to read and led me to some surprising conclusions.

At first glance, the focus on a very traditional style of leadership (traditional is relative of course) put my back up a bit as one who naturally adopts a coaching stance far more than the the more directive, controlling stance portrayed in this book. But soon it became apparent that this is a weakness in being adaptive in my own leadership style - and us agile coaches like to pride ourselves in being adaptive right?

The book has given me a fresh insight in how I can improve myself which is going to be particularly valuable as I think about my personal development objectives for the year. Agile coaches out there - read this book to get an alternative perspective!

Without a doubt the best book on leadership I have ever read. Having used the 3 circles mode in the past knowing the origins of them and the way Adair sets out the steps one needs to take to develop their leadership ability makes this a truly remarkable book. A must read for any junior manager who wants to step up their self development and become the leader they wish they had.

A book I will return to many times, I think. Well presented, with many pointers to great management and working practice.

Excellent introductory book. The only thing this book lacks is a list of books for further reading and research.

I highly recommend it to everyone.

Felt like an instruction manual to manage the process of being an effective leader, very formulaic, gives technical solutions to adaptive challenges
