Thoughts: Wow, this was really good! I was pretty much hooked from the start! Kitty, although a wallflower, is pretty mouthy. That part didn't make much sense but if you take out the wallflower part and put insecure then it's perfect. She cracked me up, especially once they ended up back in time. Having taken self defense classes she ends up laying out a couple of men and shocking

First of all, I should say that I’m not the usual audience for a romance book. I’m more of a fantasy/scifi person. However, I found myself absolutely hooked by the story and characters of this unique romance and time travel hybrid.

The main characters, Kitty, Maggie, and Simon, are all equally likable, and I was fascinated with where they would take me. Once it flashed to the Civil War, there was no turning back, and I had to know what would happen! There was a realism to the book that at times

I like historical fiction with traveling back in time elements. To have a contrast and a comparison between the Civil War era and modern times couldn't have been an easy task to undertake for any
author but, I think Joan Carney did quite well. At the first beginning of reading "Fated Memories" I saw the character Kitty as an emotional mess. But, upon further reading getting into the meat of the story I saw her strength. The storyline was superbly done, with aesthetic details of setting, time and

As a Civil War nut, this book caught my eye. It had two elements that I totally enjoy: time travel and the Civil War. Of course, I recognized the few real figures that were used in the book and the battles that were referred to. The book and the story itself was character driven with those characters dealing with the primitive conditions vs. today and the aftermath of the battles themselves. It was an interesting. thoughtful book.

Anything about time travel often fascinates me. Especially when it involves a little bit of history. That was the reason I decided to read this book. In all honesty, I wanted this book to be longer. I wanted more details because it was about the past. Who doesn't like reading and learning about the past? I have to admit that the main heroine, Kitty, didn't fascinate me at first. I didn't quite like her character. But I totally liked Maggie! And I remember thinking that if Maggie wasn't a charact ...more

Fated Memories is a beautiful story of two girls finding the love of their lives, friendship, and time travel. I was a little nervous at first since I tend to have a hard time really getting into war stories. However, Carney took a twist off the girls' perspective in the hospital. Simon, Kitty, and Maggie struggle to fit in as best as

What a delightful book! Four and a half stars!

I enjoy time travel stories and they are made more enjoyable when the historical period/location is well rendered – in this case, the Civil War period. The author does an excellent job and I was completely immersed.

Of course, I must admit to being taken in within the first couple of pages of the book when the main character buys a Chateau St Michelle wine – one of my favorite brands (although I prefer the Cab Sauv to the Reisling) and also by the fac

Kitty is having a bad time. She has problems at work, a failed romance and her room mate's recent engagement means she has to look for somewhere else to live. She goes to stay with her cousin, Maggie, who has a new boyfriend, Simon. He has memories of a past life as a soldier in the Civil War and he and Maggie both share an interest in the history of that period.
After a night out, Simon, Maggie and Kitty wake up in a field in Pennsylvania. Believing at first they have wandered into a Civil War

If there's one thing Kitty, Maggie, and Simon won't be denied, it's the ability to use the phrase "Blast from the past" literally. Fated Memories by Joan Carney is a time-travel romance, set during America's Civil War. Simply written and wonderfully narrated, it is the characters Kitty and Maggie who steer an instantly engaging plot. The descriptions are extraordinary…

This book has a little bit of something for every romance reader time-travel, historical and contemporary. I wasn’t too sure about Kitty at first, I wanted her to stand up and fight for herself and then I realised I sounded just like her mother ;-) But as the story continues and she grows, I started to like her more and more.
I loved the detail in the book, the practicality, what to wear, eat and do when you’re suddenly dropped into another era. I’m not a fan of history per se, but I do enjoy soc

I received a copy of this novel in return for an honest review.
This book is about a group of friends, Kitty, Mags and Simon who are transported into the time of the Civil War, while not my usual read the first thing I noticed was a lot of research went into this project.
This book was pretty good, it kept you guessing about what happens next and the author was not afraid to do bad things to her characters, which is recommended by great writers like Stephen King.

Fated Memories starts by introducing the two principal female characters. We first meet Kitty who is having a bad day… a bad year and a miserable existence. Next up is Maggie who is also facing her own challenges – dealing with the imminent death of her Grandmother. Both suffer from the love life blues. However, Maggie’s chance encounter with possible love interest Simon creates the position of third wheel for Kitty.

Simon is handsome, but a little bit odd. He is an over-the-top Civil War buff

I loved the book Fated Memories by Joan Carney. It has a little romance, adventure, plot and good ending. The book revolves around two women. One of the women, Kitty, has low self-esteem, even though she does have spunk and lots of talent and intelligence. However, her problem with profanity when she is at her lowest or when she's riled up, tends to make her, shell we say, less likable to ones who don't know her well. Maggie, the other woman is more self-controlled, has less baggage and is the e ...more

A very intricately written novel that really makes me get excited about every turn of the pages.

A story about the three people who accidentally went back into the past, 1981, and thrives hard to go with the flow without making the people suspect them doing illegal things. They experienced here how the people in the past fight for their life. How the hospital systems were and how they treated the people injured. How women felt violated by those unruly guys, who needed to be smacked a hundred time

Fated Memories by Joan Carney
The Author manages to draw the reader into this novel by her ability to create a character who develops consistently throughout the story. Kitty at almost 30 years of age and 5ft 10ins high is brash, pathetic and weak running home to her Mother for help.
It is when she finds herself transported back, with her friends Maggie and Simon, to the times of the American Civil War that her story begins to take shape. In my opinion there are several parts in the first seven ch

I read this a few days ago and was pleasantly surprised by the turns this story took. I had no idea what to expect and found myself transported to the American civil war, learning about medical care, earning a living, surviving as a woman in a man's world, and rooting for the trio trapped in that time period to safely make it home again. The author put a lot of effort into the historical detail and it shows. Partnered with well-developed characters, this makes for a suspenseful and entertaining ...more

Terrific story with a terrific heroine, Kitty. You think you're having a bad day? Then travel back in time and spend a few hours in 1861 during the American civil war and you'll soon change your mind. Everything is relative. I love how Kitty developed as a person from the modern-day woman with modern day problems and then being transported back to a different time that was mostly run by men and warring ones, at that. Luckily for her there is a romance to brighten her as well as challenge her and ...more

Kitty, Maggie and Simon are flung back in time to 1861. They spend the next year learning to live in a different world and during war time. Finally, they figure out how to get back home.

It was a fairly quick read, maybe that is why the characters and the story felt stymied and flat.

I give it a high 2 star, rounding up to 3, out of 5 stars.

Little did Maggie realize how much her life would change when Simon, a handsome new customer in the restaurant she worked, seemed to recognize her from some faint memories in time. At least, Maggie finds an unlikely partner in the adventure when her distant cousin, Kitty, seeks a new start in life after quitting her job as a hospital ward clerk and needs a new home since her roommate has just gotten engaged. Kitty helps Maggie with a major project regarding Maggie’s Grandma, and Simon provides M ...more

I couldn't put the book down

I really enjoyed this story. It's not often that I find a book that I stay up all night reading and don't accomplish much the next day because I can't put the book down. I hope there will be more like this from this author.
I liked the humor and the twist and turns in the story line. I couldn't predict what was coming a lot of the time which made the story much more interesting, and there were a lot of unexpected things that happen.

Entertaining and intriguing with new perspective of the Civil War

I enjoyed the bit of SciFi along with a fresh perspective of the Civil War through the eyes of the fictional time travelers. The romance angle also provided interest in character development. Nicely done debut novel. I look forward to reading the next novel by Joan Carney.

Fated Memories by Joan Carney is a well written and interesting exploration into the times of the American Civil War seen through the eyes of Kitty and Maggie who get transported back in time. Surviving as nurses they see the harsher sides of the war, although a romantic light shines its light into the novel. Frequent comparisons between the duo’s past and present keep the time travel theme alive, though as is fitting with the flavour of the novel, there is no heavy scientific content.

Joan Carney, author of Fated Memories sent me a print copy of her book for review.

Fated Memories is a time-travel adventure with a healthy dose of mystery and romance added for good measure.

Our hero, Kitty, is an interesting character; a socially insecure woman who has the ability to kick-ass and take names if push comes to shove. And of course, push seems to come to shove throughout the story. Kitty, teamed with Mags her cousin, and Mags new friend Simon, complete our time-travelling trio.

Time travel romance is a guilty pleasure of mine, but one I don’t indulge very often. A time travel romance really has to grab me with the description to make me pick it up. This one happens to be set during the Civil War, which is an interesting period to me.

Kitty is having a rough time of it, both romantically and career-wise when she makes the trip to her cousin, Maggie’

I was pleasantly surprised by Joan Carney’s debut book, Fated Memories. I say this because, I reviewed a pdf copy without seeing the cover, and I thought I was about to read a contemporary, which I usually don’t like. When the book took a turn into the past, I was delighted.

Kitty’s life is a mess. Her roommate just got engaged and she feels like a third wheel. The man she broke up with works with her and to make matters worse, her co-workers don’t like her and are thrilled when she quits her job

Joan Carney's, Fated Memories, novel was a fantastic read. It transports the reader to the time of Civil War and follows a group of friends who are lost in the past, Kitty, Mags, and Simon. The novel is well written and I can that a lot of research went into it.

Fated Memories is a fusion of time travel, historical fiction, and romance. The story takes the perspectives of Kitty and her cousin Maggie in turn. Kitty’s just coming out of a bad situation and jumps at the chance to get away and figure things out. Maggie’s trying to prepare for her grandmother’s final days. Simon is intrigued by Maggie, who resembles a woman named Lucy, a remnant of a past life of whom he’s dreamed since childhood. None of them expect to be dropped right in the middle of the ...more
