A modernist masterpiece and the zenith of brand identity documents.

Also how many books have you seen with instructions for painting your space shuttle?

The first standards manual to directly approach the problem of logo placement and proportion when decal-ing your spaceship.

Shelves: design
Design. The Worm logo – cult classic of identity design. For design nerds only.

Here is the scanned, reprinted edition, about 2010. It is a pretty good copy of the original and after 25 years it was fun to review the design, for better or worse. The logo holds up very well when used large, personally I think the use on stationery and other branding usages, with the font (as I recall it is Helvetica?) is a bit tired these days and could be redone.

Was great fun to see this book again in whatever

The NASA Graphics Standards Manual is a gorgeous and fascinating look at NASA's visual history. There's nothing wrong at all with the reproduced manual. The book loses a star, however, for the disjointed and difficult-to-follow introduction which references images based on page numbers that aren't printed in the book and dubious historical anecdotes (like PowerPoint being in widespread use by NASA engineers years before the software's original release).

Interesting approach to one of the lines most recognizable brands worldwide. however there becomes little more than a manual or an interesting document about using a brand.
If I were a manual on how to use a machine also we would give good grades?

This is a great reproduction and re-presentation of the standards manual for the iconic NASA brand identity designed by the firm Danne & Blackburn. The logo and its modernist roots are now cemented in a generation who grew up in the space shuttle age.

Even though this graphic identity is now longer used by NASA as its primary one, “the worm” is a wonderful example of design done well in the governmental context.
