The Garden Design Book
For years Garden Design magazine has been bringing its unique vision of the garden to a smart, savvy readership through its lush, arrestingly beautiful photography and thought-provoking, informative articles. Now Garden Design captures this wisdom and style in a book that delights the senses and enriches the mind. This book of visions for the new gardener. The man or woman who -- like most of us -- longs to create a special place within the world of nature. Step-by-step, from essential design elements to offbeat flourishes, from the all-important conception of an overarching design plan (the hallmark of a successful garden, be it minimal and Japanese in style or an exuberant English countryside profusion of color and shape) to the basics of planting and cultivating, from the habits and personalities of both rare and common plants to suggestions on the best ways to make the most of limited growing space (crucial to land-deprived city dwellers). Cheryl Merser and the editors of Garden Design magazine explain the new What is it, exactly? And what makes it grow? From first seed to first frost -- season after season -- The Garden Design Book takes us through the sometimes complex, sometimes blessedly simple, but always rewarding experience that is gardening.

It wasn't quite what I was looking for. Beautiful oversize photographs were the highlight of the book. Even though it was published in 1997, it still seems relevant.

Being an artist/photographer and gardener as well as wannabe writer, I judge books by the quality of the content and the visual aspects but also, the emotional connection. In this case all three. This book is on my bookshelf already and it is really a go-to Coffee Table Book on gardening.
The photographs are excellent! A great primer for newbie gardeners and a joy for old timers. I never tire of pulling it off the shelf and cuddling up on the sofa, especially during the long winter months in the Midwest.
A collaboration between Cheryl Merser and the editors of Garden Design Magazine, it is one of my favorite garden books. Written with a personal touch and experience gleaned by a self taught gardener.
This coffee Table book published well over a decade ago, spills over with wonderful photography. Plants with both the botanic and common names, design examples and some whimsy thrown in, proving that gardening really is a timeless art.
Though it is a book on garden design, my love for macro garden photography and digging around in the dirt, are both satisfied.
