A very sweet, gentle, and VERY PASTEL trip through the year as explained by a mother to her child.
Might be a good bedtime book, as it made me feel sleepy.

This book offers a quiet, lyrical look at the coming seasons and the myriad things a mother and her child look forward to doing together. It also recounts the year that the mother met and married her husband and subsequently gave birth to her child.

I love that the mother is shown to be about to breastfeed her infant in the page where she talks about the birth, and it is seen as a normal and close experience for the two.

Overall, this is a sweet story, one of remembering as well as expectation, one of familial closeness and love. Perfect for reading with a young child.

interesting quotes:

"...every step you take makes tracks, and every breath you take makes smoke." (p. 21 - unpaged)

"...leaves sing when the wind blows" (p. 26 - unpaged)

The books starts with a little girl asking her mom the simple question " Mama, what comes in spring?". She asnwers her questions with things that happen in the spring, but soon each season not only tells the story what the seasons include, but also the story of she fell in love with her father, got married and had a child who they love dearly. The illustrations are vivid, it uses a range of colors and the images look a bit faded as a way to show us that this are memories from the past. I would use this story to not only teach my students about the seasons, but i would evolve the lesson into having them create a small book with a memory of something that happened to them in each one of the seasons that is special to them.

I decided to read this book because the cover had the word spring on it and I wanted to read about spring...instead. this is more of a seasons book. Mom met dad in the spring, they got married in the summer, the baby was conceived in Fall, the baby gets bigger in mama tummy in Winter and then the baby is born in Spring. It does make a full circle but it more about life and events than seasons. The pictures are very nice and it is a sweet book just not what I was expecting. Still worth reading!

A mother and child review the seasons highlighting the significance of each for their family. Pastel illustrations give the book the hazy sweet feelings of memories. PreK-2.
