Although this is clearly a counting book, starting from one onion and concluding with twelve tulips, it is much more than that. It's also a celebration of the joys of gardening with brief, carefully chosen phrases about each part of the garden, including produce and even earthworms. The digital artwork shows each item alone and then in its particular place in that garden. One of my favorite images shows the young gardener, ear pressed to the ground, as he endeavors to hear the sounds made by those earthworms, "squirming through the soil" (unpaged). As the garden becomes filled with all sorts of fruits and vegetables, it's easy to see what the boy will have for lunch since he had the pickings of a delicious and healthy lunch right in front of him. Not only does this book remind readers that growing your own foods can be fun, but those endpapers are filled with all sorts of greenery and a brightly-colored butterfly flitting around. The book lives up to its name since that's exactly what happens here--readers spend time counting in a most abundant garden.
