One of the most profound books I have ever read. Wagner's ideas about governing our appetites and educating children to be respectful of the past were particularly significant. Though this book was originally published in 1904, the ideas are refreshingly timely. We all need to learn these vital lessons before it is too late, because today our quest for more and more not only impacts our individual happiness and social cohesion, but has enormous implications for the environment. We are destroying ...more

Surprisingly Relevant

For a book written over a century ago, there sure are a lot of passages that sound like they could be read at a graduation speech this year.

I found myself agreeing with much of what was written, and probably highlighted a quarter of the text.

Może warto zaciągnąć hamulec ręczny i wysiąść z te ...more

This book is universal and timeless. Written in 1895, it applies perfectly for today. The heart of men is always the same. Simplicity, as the author wrote, is a "state of mind". Paradoxically, to live simple has been very hard for us. Maybe in our distracted world of today is even more complicated. This amazing book is full of positive and well written philosophy.

Not to be mistaken as a book about minimalism. He goes beyond materialism to be the heart of man and society.

Some chapters are gold and definitely worth a reread while others I more quickly read through.

I’d definitely recommend this book. Very quotable.

Solid book

A student urged me to read this book, and I am glad I did. The discussion with the student is going to be better than the book though.
