It’s summer in Emmett’s Bluff, and the ice is spreading. Six months after confronting an enemy from the future, Malcolm and Valentine Gilbert have returned to their normal teenage lives. Or, they’ve tried to. During the battle to save their town, a mysterious force awoke inside the twins. Time calls to them, and it’s growing too strong to be ignored.  When warriors from a ...more

This is the second book in the series and though I haven't read the first one, it was easy to follow. Val and Malcom are trying to live as normal teenagers along with their friends. However, a strange visit, changes everything and they are "forced" to re-consider acting like "normal" teenagers would.
The book is nicely written with a fast pace and a lot of actions scenes. We watch their everyday life along with the battles that take place occasionally.
The writer built the story really good and th

I wasn’t expecting The Black Tempest. Admittedly, I should have been A Year of Lightning snuck up on me too, yet I was still shocked when I was drawn into a story I couldn’t put down.

The action in The Black Tempest is non-stop. So much so that before I was even 40% in I ordered print editions of both books in the Time Shift Trilogy for my son. (The middle child doesn’t love eBooks ;( what’s wrong with that kid?) Between the action, that was sometimes too fast for my old brain, the solid friendsh
Pages For Thoughts
In the previous book, it was obvious that Malcolm and Valentine had powers, but they were fully explained and enhanced in this book. I loved the descriptive adjectives and sensory details when they were using their powers. I agree with the author’s decisions about Winter. There are a ton of characters already, and I liked how her plot line went in a different direction, but was at the same time still involved. I loved seeing the fragile side of Winter, and I am sympathetic to her family situatio ...more

This book begins six months after the last book ended. Malcolm and Valentine are just now starting to feel like things are getting back to normal. Just as they are saying their final goodbyes to a friend lost in battle, another warrior falls into their world. This starts a series of events that sets the twins on a path to learn just how special their relationship with time really is.
I really enjoyed all the new elements introduced in this book. The first book only scratched the surface of the t
I LOVE this series. It's basically a teen sci-fi/superhero/time travel saga with great action—but honestly, my favorite part is the friend group. Their relationships are so believable and funny and addicting, and you come to really care a lot about all the side characters, not just Valentine and Malcolm. SO. GOOD. Definitely read the Year of Lightning too. :D

Received as a giveaway. A good time travelling story. Would have been better if I had read the first book in the trilogy first.

This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Filled with action, suspense, some fantastic sci-fi/time travel scenarios (especially when paired with some of the medieval flavor that appears here), this was a page-turner unlike anything I have read in some time. It was fun getting reacquainted with the likes of Mal and Val, Fred, John, Winter, etc., and the new supporting cast was just as engaging! Filled with twist upon twist, breathtaking world-building, and an utterly relentless thi ...more

If nothing else, that cover art is awesome!
But I do enjoy the story, the action, the science, the time travel! What’s special about this series is the interaction between the generations; the kids learn that old people are interesting and fun and have a lot to offer.
One thing that kept bothering me was the supposed age of the kids. Freshmen , on average, do not have this level of maturity , are not enrolled in upper level classes, and are not ready for the personal relationships as described in

2nd Installation in the Time Shift Trilogy.

Just when twins Mal and Val are starting to think everything is back to normal, everything goes very, very wrong. As they try to work it out, they discover new things about themselves and make some rather extraordinary new friends.

This is a fun series! Do give it a read!

While The Year of Lightning had straddled the line between science fiction and fantasy, The Black Tempest moves over to fantasy, directing the plot towards a world where there are people that can manipulate time at will, and an eternal kingdom that protects the timeline. Though most of the story still takes place in Emmett's Bluff, a significant part of the plot comes from that kingdom. Asha and Thorn, princess and prince of the Everwatch, are transported to this current time, and are fighting a ...more
