Part of the Animals Illustrated series, this title introduces young readers to the muskox, one of the denizens of the Arctic region. Detailed and eye-catching illustrations complement the interesting facts about the muskox, a creature not typically described in most nonfiction books featuring animals. With their layers of special hairs, these enormous animals are able to withstand severe cold temperatures. Snippets about the muskox's range, its eating habits, and how it confronts predators are provided here as well as a skeleton so readers can see what it looks like beneath its shaggy coat. Despite its resemblance to bison, a muskox has several characteristics that are unique to its species and make it different from a bison or a buffalo. This might be a good title to include in an elementary science classroom library.
