Born in the Canary Islands in 1907, Josefina de la Torre was one of only two women included in Gerardo Diego's prestigious Poesia espanola (1934). Between 1927 and 1935 she lived in Madrid, impressing Federico Garcia Lorca, Rafael Alberti, Pedro Salinas, and others in the Generation of l927 with both her talent and beauty. De la Torre is the author of four collections of poems and two short novels.

Regardless of the popularity and critical success of her work in the Spanish-speaking world, this is the first time any of de la Torre's books have been published in English. Carlos Reyes's thoughtful and spirited translation of two volumes of her poetry will bring this important poet to an audience long deprived of the beauty and power of her work.

I had never heard or experienced Josefina de la Torre's poetry before this collection, so my expectations were moderate, and luckily this translated collection blew me away. I was utterly entranced by the language used by this poet and I am so bummed that I am not a Spanish speaker because I know that I am missing so much by only experiencing the amazing translation work by Carlos Reyes. The "Sketches and Verses" section of the collection were my absolute favorites as the author used a haibun-like form to convey memory, returning home, and the spiritual experience of the landscape. There is so much culture and time preserved in these lines, and I am itching to get some of my Spanish speaking friends to read me the original poems so I can experience the lyricism.

Things I liked~
*I loved the form and interaction between each larger prose poem and its accompanying lyrical poem. They worked so well together.
*The language is gorgeous, I can't fathom how amazing the original must be.
*The descriptions and experience of the nature in these poems are gorgeous and I am looking forward to borrowing her style of making the landscape magical.
*Odd inclusion, but I loved the translator's notes in this book explaining his journey and the life of the original poet.

There was nothing about this collection I disliked or would change.

Este libro nos muestra la vida de la mujer de la época. Alude continuamente al paisaje de las Islas, concretamente de Gran Canaria al ser donde nació. Nos enseña sus vivencias, el cariño a sus familiares y el dolor tras la pérdida de ellos, sobre todo de su marido. El haber amado y sentirse vacía tras su partida.
Otro tema al que hace referencia la autora es que nunca llegó a ser completamente feliz debido a su esterilidad. Ella deseaba hijos y por eso le dedica varios poemas a ese pesar y lo injusta que es la vida en estas ocasiones. Es una mujer referente en la literatura española. Gran libro, aunque a veces sea un poco complejo.
