Jenny W. Chan is an origami teacher and designer based in New York City. She is the founder of Origami Tree, a one-stop resource with hundreds of free projects for children, parents, and teachers seeking to learn the art of origami.

Jenny has been folding origami since she was a little girl and began designing fun, simple models for her “crafty friends” on YouTube in 2014. Her repertoire ranges from traditional origami stars to contemporary unicorns, cats, and cartoon characters. Her modular models sometimes require hundreds of sheets of paper!

Jenny has collaborated with Good Housekeeping, Post-it® Brand, Paper Source, Darby Smart, Stream Con NYC, and more. She has even taught origami to First Lady McCray (NYC)! In 2015, she won first place in the Paper Crafts and Scrapbook Category in The Craftys, which celebrates the best in crafts and DIY, and judges on technical expertise, creative expression, and innovation. In 2016, she was chosen as a YouTube NextUp winner after being hand-picked to participate in the legendary program alongside some of the most promising creators on the platform. Currently, she is working on an origami book, Creative Origami & Beyond, with other origami folders, to be published by Walter Foster Publishing in November 2016.

In her spare time, Jenny enjoys designing, pursuing musical endeavors, and discovering and sharing new crafty mediums. Her latest fascination is creating stop motion animation. You’ll also frequently find her supporting young artists, on and offline. Because she believes that creators, big or small, should support one another, she often collaborates with other artists, fans, family-owned businesses, as well some larger businesses.

Today, Jenny is active in New York City, teaching origami in English and Chinese. She especially enjoys working with children and senior citizens. She offers origami and general crafting tutorials, demonstrations, and giveaways regularly on her YouTube channel, home to over 11 million viewers and a rapidly growing fan base. I received a copy of this book from the publisher for review. It contains 18 projects of varying complexity that utilize a variety of techniques. The projects include some wearable items like a bracelet and a crown, a large lampshade, a miniature box decorated with a flower, and some cute decorative projects. In addition to conventional paper-folding projects, there are projects that incorporate paper folding and paper-techniques, and projects that incorporate sewable electronics so they light up. The last section explores wet folding techniques that are used to create a tree and owl suitable for Halloween decorating and a gnome that could be used as a Christmas decoration.

The instructions in the book are accessible and there lots of pictures to accompany the detailed, step-by-step instructions. It is a good introductory book and the techniques, once mastered, could be used in other projects.

From this book I know more about various types of paper that can be formed in various ways through origami. Some interesting things that I tried were when making bookmarks and miniature lily flowers. Some of the instructions seemed a bit confusing but thankfully I was still able to finish making them.
