When I saw the quote on the back of this novel saying 'In the vein of Louise Penny...', I was worried. Louise Penny is my favourite author and, for this reader, that's a high bar. I'm thrilled to report that I was delighted by this book... and it's a deserved comparison!
King's Cove has a similar community feel to Three Pines. Sure, it's a lot smaller and based in BC, rather than Québec, but these folks are compelling, interesting, and feel like real human beings. It was fascinating to spend time with them! As a Canadian who misses her homeland, I was deeply appreciative of the descriptions of nature and weather, the Canadian terms for things (elements, not hobs; gas, not petrol!), and a rural setting that felt like going home.
Lane Winslow has rocketed to being one of my favourite characters in fiction. She's intelligent, kind, brave, and very sweet! It was an absolute joy to spend time with her. I grew so attached to her so quickly! She's joining the likes of Armand Gamache and Vera Stanhope in my I-wish-they-were-real-so-we-could-be-pals list.
I liked the pace of the book: relaxing into the community, meeting Lane, and the slower pace of the backstories being revealed. I found the pacing made this much, much more than a standard mystery and a more immersive reading experience. This reader was heavily invested in finding the killer, drawing suspicion away from Lane, and ensuring that this fragile community isn't damaged by the violent act of murder.
There's something really special about this book. I can't wait to read the next one!
I am deeply grateful to my Mom for recommending this series and sending me a copy of the first two books! These magnificent books are really hard to track down in Scotland. How is Iona Whishaw not on a global bestseller list?! Let's fix that. 🍁
