I have read the previous three installments and now I am finally getting to learn so much more about Quin. He seems so screwed up and we learn how he came to own Artos his faithful dog. He escapes the military and is on the run. Augustus is mentioned in this book as well and we learn ab

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD! The author recommends reading AWOL after the other books in the trilogy but it can be enjoyed spoiler free anytime after Legacy.

I have just finished this novella, my first by this author - and yes, I did read it before the first novel Legacy! It has only made me want to read the author's trilogy more. This is not the sort of genre I would normally read but the premise fascinates me and to be hon

Ellery Kane can write. She is so good at this, that there were many moments during this series that I was hating on Quin hardcore and it was making me mad at my own boyfriend as if he was being the obtuse boy. I love the concept of of the emotion altering drugs in a government that's clearly trying to find ways to control the public without making it obvious. That was very well portrayed without going to the immediate "the government does what it wants".

Now the cons, they're not very major. And

Lex starting off on this adventure that her mother and herself planned sucks you in from the start, the unanswered questions swirly in your mind. When the reason for her adventure is finally revealed a sense of the story not ending there sets in. When Lex finally meets Quinn and gets brought into the resistance the plot twists just come along in force, who can she really trust in this messed up world of martial law and emotional stunting drugs. I was gripped by the twists this story had, just wh ...more

It is 2041 and society as we know it is gone. Drugs have been developed to help control your emotions. The applications are endless. Help calm a surgeon before a big operation and such. But with anything like this, there are always those willing to exploit the applications. How about a super soldier that has no qualm about killing? What about those that are looking for that next big high.

Enter Alexandra, Lex, her mother is the one that developed these drugs. Lex is determined to get the truth a

I had a very hard time trying to write this review. This series left me wondering what would happen if this really happened today. The author did an amazing job grabbing the reader in and not letting go. And putting in a couple of turns in the plot to make you wonder what way the story was going to go. I do wish we could learn more about Lexi’s mom and her relationship with Ryker. Was there something really there? But I liked that we got to

Maturing author

This author seems to have a good grasp of legal issues. The books are set in a transition time between normal 21st c life and a dystopian future. The clash (perhaps intentional) between a surface "normal" and a deeply troubling undercurrent could have been better developed.
The chapters are short, similar to J. Patterson's writing. It makes the books easy to set down and pick up later.
The writing is maturing, so if you like the first book you will want to continue with the other t

Emotions are completely under control using medicines. This may seem like a good thing but in the hands of the wrong people they could create the perfect killers. This series has a very steady pace that just makes it easy to read. I suggest getting the whole series at once since you will not want to stop. The characters all seem to hide their own secrets that seem to come out at the most inopportune times. This complexity keeps you guessing throughout the whole series until the end.

This is a brilliant and engrossing series that captures your imagination. The characters are interesting and the storyline is thought provoking and enjoyable.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Candid Book Reviews. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.

I don't even know where to begin. I had no expectations going into this box set. I could have had insanely high expectations, and I would not have been disappointed. Ellery Kane is a brilliant writer. The story is woven masterfully, with beautiful explorations of relationships (between friends, family, lovers, enemies, and a gorgeous dog). This story rings true enough to be terrifying, is supported by enough theoretical propositions to be realistic, and is just far enough beyond comprehension th ...more

I enjoyed this series a lot. I was a little disappointed with this last book because I wanted more details. I didn't really get a feel for Quin in regards to the other relationships that developed before Lex came into the picture. I did get to understand why Quin is a closed off person and his reasoning for leaving the Guardians. ...more

I enjoyed reading AWOL and getting another glimpse at Quin and the way he thinks and feels. It was interesting to hear his thoughts on everything before he met and fell in love with Lex. I enjoyed this series as a whole and I enjoyed this prequel as well. I would recommend it to others.

Forensic psychologist by day, novelist by night, Ellery Kane has been writing--professionally and creatively--for as long as she can remember. Just like many of her main characters, Ellery loves to ask why, which is the reason she became a psychologist in the first place. Real life really is stranger than fiction, and Ellery's writing is often inspired by her day job. Evaluating violent criminals ...more
