The Ghost With the Green Thumb is a wonderful little treasure masquerading as a pre-teen mystery book! It centers around Beth, a young girl who has agreed to spend the summer with her grandfather following the death of her beloved grandmother. As Beth helps her grandfather deal with grief and loss she is also aided in her quest to solve a peculiar mystery by next door neighbor Billy. Things aren't quite what they seem in the garden the grandmother left behind and the first stirrings of puppy ...more

This book handles the topic of a young girl’s special relationship with her grandparents in an interesting manner that would appeal to its young audience.

The likeable main character, Beth, holds a compelling mix of courage and compassion. She’s invited to spend a summer month supporting her grandfather, following the sudden and sad death of her loving grandmother. Despite the serious nature of the overall storyline, Beth soon discovers a solid mystery that needs solving to add intrigue. Plus

The Ghost with the Green Thumb is a poignant, touching tale that sensitively deals with the subject of grief. Young Beth is facing a summer stay with her Grandfather – just months after the death of her Grandmother. She is there to help him adjust to life as a widower. After noting that her Grandmother’s beloved flowers have died in the front of the house, Beth is surprised to find that her Grandmother’s walled Lover’s Garden (a not-so-Secret-Garden) is flourishing. The mystery is… who is ...more

A lovely book about love, loss, and healing.

Beth agrees to go stay with her grandfather during the summer holidays. Her grandmother died recently, and the hope is that she can help her grandfather start to heal from his grief. Along the way we have the mystery of who is maintaining her grandmother’s garden, and why her grandfather sees only decay and weeds when others can see the beautiful flowers.

We also have a delightful, age appropriate romance with Billy and other well developed characters.

The Ghost with the Green Thumb by Maggie M. Larche is a lovely, charming story about a young girl’s quest to help her grandfather through his grief over the death of his wife. The relationship between Beth and her grandfather was nicely developed, as was her budding friendship with his young neighbor, Billy. With strong familial relationships, an intriguing ghost story / mystery and hints of romance between Beth and Billy, this book provides a lot to enjoy. All of the above, along with its ...more

A sweet story of gardens, grandmas, and seeing the world differently when someone passes.
Perfect for pre-teen ages 9-12. I could picture the garden and the scenes vividly by the description in the text. Adding in a little bit of mystery and adventure kept the pace moving quickly. The issue of death and how we all cope in our own way was touched upon lightly and in the right way for this age group. I was given a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a mysterious and sweet story about a twelve-year-old who spends a summer with her grandfather and wants to help him deal with his grief. It was a beautiful story and I found the characters to be very endearing. I appreciated the care in which the author dealt with the issues in the story and the main character’s interest in Billy. It was well written and has a warm center to it. I wanted to see what happened and found myself caught up in the story.

A well written story about pre-teen feelings. Part romance, part ghost story, it's a nice read for 8-12 year olds that tells them a bit about love and loss without preaching.
