Where Jesus Slept

Where Jesus Slept written by Norma Lewis and illustrated by Katy Hudson. Where Jesus Slept is beautifully written and illustrated. I love this book. It is great for a little one especially those dear and near to your heart. What a wonderful way to share the true joy of Christmas. Be sure to order your copy of Where Jesus Slept today. 4 stars! This is a sweet Christmas story, written in the same form as The House That Jack Built. The continued repetition of the text makes it easy for small children to catch on and perhaps repeat some of it with the adult reader each time it repeats.
The illustrations are marvelous. They are very eye-catching, and perfectly illustrate the text on each page without appearing too busy.
My only complaint with the story is that Joseph is never mentioned, and isn't even pictured until the next to the last page of the book. Other than that, it is a book that could easily become part of the family tradition of Christmas.

I ordered this for my daughter's library... had I known it was a book that keeps building, I would not have bought it. SO. REPETITIVE. I'm just not into those kinds of books. It's cute otherwise, but my 4 year-old literally asked me "why do you keep saying those words again?" Lol!

I like the repetitive rhythm of the book. It is very appropriate for young leaders in learning about the basic theology in the story of Christmas.

Such a cute book. goes along the theme of there was an old lady! all 3 of my boys (10,4,1) sat and listened to the book.

One of the things I love about the Christmas season is the coziness of the season. I have cherished memories of snuggling in the big rocker recliner with my little children piled around me or cuddling on the sofa with a big blanket and a pile of Christmas picture books. Twinkling Christmas tree lights and hot homemade cocoa made it all the cozier.
My children are now nearly all grown. They range from 15 through 25. Gone are the days of cuddling up with a pile of books and reading the evening away. Now they're busy with many things. But. They still insist on the tradition of a new Christmas picture book every year. I usually present it to the family on Christmas Eve. It's my pleasure to review books in an effort to find the perfect one.
I really like Where Jesus Slept. Although I read it silently, I can just imagine how nice it will be to read it aloud. It's inspired by the Mother Goose rhyme "The House that Jack Built." Remember? If not, I'm sure you can Google it. ~smile~
I enjoy books that have rhythm and rhyme. They're just so much fun to read to children—even if they're nearly grown. Norma Lewis has used it beautifully to tell the dearly beloved account of our Savior's birth.
The cover is typical of the art throughout. Katy Hudson has presented quiet, peaceful, restful illustrations throughout the book. The colors and people are tasteful. She does not make the characters in the book look like outlandish cartoons as many illustrators are apt to do. Baby Jesus is a perfect example of her style.
I highly recommend this book—especially if you have littles from birth to about seven or eight. It would be a merry little book to enjoy with emergent readers. The repetition would reinforce new words they were learning. Mostly, it's a book to enjoy and keep the focus of Christmas just where it should be—with Christ.

It is hard to believe we are already half way through November. Christmas is fast approaching. It may not feel like it just yet here, but I'm excited none-the-less. Christmas is an amazing time of the year. There are so many things to look forward to. One of my favorite traditions is pulling out my old favorite Christmas stories and sharing them with my kiddo.
Where Jesus Slept is one of those stories, that you want to hang on to and add it to your Christmas book collection. This was a beautifully illustrated story! The rhyming was a good pace and kept it smooth for reading aloud.
For young children, explaining the story of Jesus' birth can bring about some questions, "What is a manger?" "What does a stable look like?" This book I thought broke it down in a sweet way to point out to young children the story of baby Jesus and made it understandable to them. The color and pictures of the book just popped off of the page and brought the story all together perfectly.
I also enjoyed how the book started and ended with Bible verses. They were the perfect bookends.

My Review: This is the cutest Christmas story book I've seen in a long time! The repetition of the rhyme and building of it is so appealing to little ones. They can easily and quickly memorize the repetitive verses and say them along with whoever is reading it to them. I shared this with several little ones, from babies to older preschoolers. The youngest ones enjoyed listen to the verses: "This is the bed where Jesus slept. This is the straw that lined the bed where Jesus slept. This is the stable that sheltered the cow that shared the straw that lined the bed where Jesus slept......" The youngest ones had a fun time looking at the pictures while I made the sounds of the animals in illustrations and pointed out certain things illustrated while repeating the verse to them which made them laugh! Older ones were able to engage in the story while pointing to and naming parts of illustrations and asking questions. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful. They could be framed paintings in an art museum. They did not include too many things so that the children were overwhelmed.

When my kids were younger, I remember reading to them a funny little book called "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly" by Pam Adams. It started with the woman swallowing a fly. Then, with each page, it added something new. By the end of the book, there was one very long sentence about all the different things the woman had swallowed. I immediately thought about that book when I first started reading WHERE JESUS SLEPT by Norma Lewis, because it is the same cumulative type of story.
This is the bed where Jesus slept.

This is the cow that shared the straw that lined the bed where Jesus slept.
and so on.....
It starts with Jesus sleeping sweetly in a manger, and ends with the wise men bringing Him gifts. (I personally believe the wise men did not come to the stable on the night Jesus was born, but that is a minor detail). Children will love the repetition of this story, as well as the appealing illustrations.

What a sweet rendition of the birth of Jesus! I think little ones will absolutely love this book. It is bright, colorful, has repetition, and will appeal to your young ones any time of year. I appreciated the author putting key words in bold print and capital letters. A great way to point to a child the key words on the page. Repetition is also important for a child, so I like that the theme continues on each page and copies that important parts to this story, namely where Jesus slept. I loved the sketches on each page as well. I was a little concerned it might be a little bit too babyish, but I thought the illustrator did an excellent job. I think I may want to read this every year in celebration of Jesus' birth too!

What a cute book! Tis the season coming up for this wonderful story about our Savior. Very well illustrated by Katy Hudson. Very colorful my Granddaughter Maddi kept saying how beautiful it is. She loved the story. The story of what took place that wonderful day our Savior was born. I would read to her and she would say the part Where Jesus Slept! Wonderful story of Christ for our little ones to hear. At the end of the story Maddi said, Nana Jesus loves me and I love Him. Makes your heart melt. Great book pick it up for the Holiday coming up. 5 star

I love Christmas, and I love children's books - so basically I love this book! Such a sweet book to tell the simple story of Jesus' birth to young children. The story builds upon itself through the pages as it introduces the characters involved in the story of Jesus' birth. Young kids will enjoy the building story and illustrations, while older kids will love being able to read the simple text for themselves. *We received a copy of this book to aid in our review*

This is a book I loved reading with my grandson. The illustrations are really nice to look at and talk about. The story is all about where JESUS slept. This is a beautiful book. It has a hard cover and a slip cover. The story is based on the verse Luke 2:10B-11 The words describe the pages very well and by the time you finish the book.. you will know where JESUS slept.
