I seem to be in the minority here, but I’m afraid that I didn’t really enjoy this book, my first by Ranae.
It wasn’t an easy read at all, mainly due to the author not having followed standard publication and formatting guidelines of starting a new paragraph each time a different character spoke. Some paragraphs ran on for pages (one example was over three pages), with multiple people talking within that paragraph, which made it hard work to get through. It seriously slowed the pace of the story down and I had to keep re-reading sections to try and work out who said what. Having two characters so similar in name, Jade and Jace, I also found distracting.
I feel that the book is in serious need of editing, either that or for Ranae to find a new editor/proofreader if one was employed. I’m by no means perfect when it comes to grammar/typos etc. but that’s why all authors need a good editor. I found numerous misuse of words, spelling errors, grammatical errors, like inconsistant understanding of whether to use commas or full stops at the end of speech. There was also a lot of repetition of pet names and phrases, and dialogue tags which wouldn’t have been needed had the “new person speaking, new paragraph” rule been applied.
For my personal tastes this was more of a miss than a hit - I was so distracted by the issues mentioned above that it pulled me out of the story and I just didn’t feel the chemistry or attraction between the lead characters. In fact I found myself constantly checking what percentage of the book I’d read on my kindle, and trying to work out how long it would be before I finished it.
I believe that there’s the bones of an enjoyable story in there, but it definitely needs someone to do some serious editing work on it to make it shine. Coming up with, and writing, a manuscript is the hardest part for an author, and Ranae has done that so she deserves some kudos. Polishing it and making it the best it can be is down to a employing a good editor.
Ordinarily, based on the above, I wouldn’t have continued reading this book after the first few chapters, I’d simply have put it on my DNF shelf. I was, however, provided with a free copy in exchange for my honest review so I felt obliged to see it through to the end and do just that. As I say I seem to be in the minority with my feelings, so don’t be put off trying it, but I hope that my review is taken in the spirit of constructive feedback. 2 stars out of 5.
