When I first agreed to review this book, I thought it was a cozy/mystery. I am going to say not a mystery (and I blame no one but myself for thinking this!) and then as I started reading I thought it was a dystopian book...nope, it is set in the early 1930's during the depression. It took me awhile to figure this out (and once again no one's fault but mine as I should have read the synopsis again before starting the book because it clearly gives the time frame!). With all that said, here is what ...more

I received a request from the author to read As the Liquor Flows in exchange for an honest review. At first, I hesitated since I had accepted several books for review, but the book description was so intriguing I decided to accept. Wow! I am so glad I did.

Evelyn Ford is desperate. Her brother is missing, the cupboards bare. She must find some way to survive. She leaves her hovel in Central Park to look for work.

When she applies for a job at a Burlesque theater, she meets Vincent Giovanni, a man

A world of mobsters, guns, and hooch, a world of corruption and murder, all the makings of some mystery crime novel or movie.....

I had a hard time grasping this at first. It was kinda slow bit it picked up around the 3rd or 4th chapter. The story line is great and I loved Evelyn and Max. This book takes place back in the era of Al Capone and the time when mobsters were big. Evelyn goes to get a job at a burlesque bar but Maggie quickly smashes her hopes. Right when she is going to leave in walk

Desperation as forced Evelyn Ford to look for work at a local burlesque theatre. She has no dance experience, or even much experience with men, but her cupboards are empty and her brother is missing. Just as she's about to leave she is spotted by Vincent Giovanni, head of a local mafia gang, and he instantly likes what he sees. As fate would have it, Evelyn's brother also got involved with Vincent and now Evelyn is forced to work off his debt in whatever means Vincent wants. Although Evelyn has ...more

“A world of mobsters, guns, and hooch, a world of corruption and murder….”
As the Liquor Flows is an intriguing, engaging, suspenseful book. It’s fast-paced with plenty of excitement; the words fly off the page. Well-developed characters that come alive. Evelyn is an innocent as well as feisty as she courageously struggles to survive, trouble seems to find her wherever she turns. Max is secretive but deep down you really hope he’s the good guy you want him to be. He’s the one person she can trust

I received an ARC for this review.

As The Liquor Flows is a historical romance set in the 1930s depression/prohibition period U.S. and the glory days of the mafia.

Evelyn Ford's brother has disappeared, leaving her penniless and desperate. Forced to look for work wherever she can, she puts on her nicest dress and goes to apply at a nearby burlesque theater where she catches the eye of Don Vincent Giovanni, a kingpin in the New York Mafia, who wants to make her his next acquisition.

InD'tale Magazine

The author does a tremendous job of recreating the aftermath of Black Tuesday with nearly lyrical descriptions of New York, and the stark contrast between the haves and have-nots.
