2.5 maybe a 3 at a stretch. Okay, really quite difficult to rate this one... while it sucked me in and I read to the end, it wasn't a really satisfying read in the end. Lackluster HEA might be the best description.
Spoilers may follow!!!!
The reason I was sucked in was that I was expecting and hoping for a massive, epic grovel... because, let's face it, the hero was a massive, huge, ENORMOUS, wimpy COWARD. One of the most cowardly and selfish heroes I think I've ever read. I'm glad we got his point of view, so we know how bad he felt about being such a wimp and the fact that he KNEW he was doing the wrong thing, not least because the heroine didn't really get that (she got the 1.5 second, after 3 years, "oops, sorry, I'm here now, lets forget it ever happened" crap), and so without it we readers would never have known. But that just proves how not only cowardly, but selfish, he was being. It was all about how he didn't want to see her and have her make him face how cowardly, wrong and selfish his behavior was.
I get that while it was insta-love from her pov, it might have only been insta-lust from his, so I can maybe see why abandoning the relationship after only a month or so might be excusable to him in his own mind - but in this case there was also a child involved. His own child. You don't abandon a child the way he did, especially after the promises made and the fact that he knew what her circumstances were (no family support, no club support, no help from him, and precarious job/money situation, etc). But then, as he realised it was more than lust, it was actually love, he should have stepped up. You don't treat someone you love that way, leave them dealing with those circumstances. Then to top it off, she did the doormat-insta-cave. God I HATE that. Have some self-respect woman! After what he put her through, she was owed - and he should have had to show - some atonement, some effort, some regrets for what he did.
I also get that she just wanted him back, she loved him, and after struggling pretty much alone for so long, she wanted him and his support, but he should have had to WORK to get her back, and he should have offered her support with no expectations as part of that. He should have had to prove to her, and us readers, that in future, in difficult circumstances, he won't take the easy way out and just bail AGAIN. I mean, his abandonment, not only of her, but of his CHILD, could have had pretty dire consequences. If it hadn't been for the bestie and his sister stepping up, it definitely would have. Have to say, I loved the bestie and his sister, and want books for them. Pretty sure guy-bestie is definitely on the horizon, I just hope that he's not gonna do an about-face and be another douchy hero when he gets to star in his own story.
Back to the current book. I loved seeing the heroine discover her own strengths and capabilities. But then again, she had no choice. She couldn't bail the way the hero did. She had to step up. Which just made it doubly disappointing when the "hero" returned and she caved instantly. So yeah, a yellow-bellied, lily-livered, coward of a hero who can't prove he's there for the tough stuff, and a heroine willing to except crumbs and shitty treatment all in the name of love. Luckily for the author, I liked the main supporting characters enough that I'll give her another chance and read the next in the series.
