Secrets. Forgiveness. Death.

Nothing has been right in Kasper’s life for quite some time. Then the eclipse comes, and his father is stolen away. When the police arrive, instead of trying to help, they drag off his mother too. Read and reviewed as part of the Goodreads Reviewer's Association. I enjoyed this book but to be perfectly honest, I wanted to enjoy it more than I did. A suspenseful YA novel with one foot in fantasy, it had some great elements and threads of a cinematic thriller. The story centers on a thirteen yr old boy (Kasper) and his 14 yo, female cousin and best friend (Loki).

Kasper and his family are still mourning the death of his older brother. Kasper is a troubled youth that still blames himself for

‘Forget everything you've ever learned about the stars and they'll once more be
transformed into angels, or into children, or into whatever you want to believe
at that moment. It won't make you more stupid – after all, it's only a game.’
– Paulo Coelho

This book commences with this wondrous and thought-provoking quote, of another well-known author; Paulo Coelho.

If taken heed, this quote is more than a quote - it not only is functioning as a piece of quotation, but as an advice. A stupendous advi

The Boy Who Spoke to Stars is the first in a trilogy by debut author Ben Miles, and I can’t wait to continue on with the series to see how things will conclude. Things just aren’t going right for thirteen year old Kasper, and his family. Kasper’s father disappears after an eclipse viewing, but when Kasper finally makes it home his family is acting quite strange as well. An investigator, Dupin, is questioning everyone, and it is becoming obvious that secrets are swirling in the air. Inspector Dup ...more

Kasper and Loki just don't have the best luck in the world right now. First one is morning the loss of a bother and then the dad goes missing. So if things weren't tough enough already, well its going to be. They both have to run, its just the best thing for them right now and possibly the best thing they have done.

We get to learn that the starts connect with them and how strong the bond with boys is. Nightmares, missing parents, murders, a bunch of things that should not have to happen, happen

This is a totally absorbing, cleverly-written book, which immerses you in it's world without the detail and intricacies becoming overwhelming. The story twists and kinks like a coiled spring, finally bursting into a gripping, powerful, wonderfully crafted conclusion that poises the reader, full of anticipation, for book 2. ...more

An Advanced Middle Grade, Early YA Head Trip

There are lots of middle grade boy/girl double acts in which the heroes have to embark on a quest of understanding and discovery in order to save themselves, their families or the world. Since that sounds a lot like a romantic and exciting version of adolescent life in general I'm good with that framework, understand its popularity, and applaud any author who can bring something fresh to the game.

Reuben Miles does give us a fresh treatment, and his boo

In The Boy Who Spoke To Stars, Kasper and his family are mourning the death of his older brother. Kasper blames himself for losing his brother, and when they travel out to see a solar eclipse, Kasper’s father disappears and doesn’t return. When the police drag off his mother too, Kasper’s aunt and uncle take care of him and promise to keep him safe. But when Loki’s parents go missing too, Kasper and his cousin, Loki,

Although "The Boy Who Spoke to Stars" features younger characters the prose is descriptive and well developed. One member of a small, close knit family disappears and dredges up a connection with a seemingly sinister scientific experiment from the adults' past that was shut down. An acquaintance has rebooted the experiment with vigor, apparently putting the world in danger from an ancient darkness that controls people through their connect

I read a lot of books and a lot of books aren’t very good. So, I get very excited when I find a gem like this one. From start to finish it is a captivating read. It immerses you in its world with its twists and turns. I read the whole book in just under 2 days! I couldn’t put it down. Reuben has created a truly unique story, appealing to all ages. This is the first book of the trilogy and I’m eager to find out what happens next. In my opinion, the book has huge cinematic potential and I would lo ...more

I decided to read this book even though the premise seemed rather weak to me. To my pleasure, I found I couldn't stop reading some parts of it. At the same time, the science / fantasy aspects were as unconvincing as I expected. That said, I enjoyed reading the book and am glad I did. ...more

The story sets itself up as a typical mystery adventure, but then a big early reveal sends it careering off in a competely unexpected direction. I can't think of another story like this one. All the normal ingredients are there. Compelling protagonists, genuinely disturbing antagonists, twist and turns and shocks and 'hoorays!' and 'oh nos!', but Reuben mixes them together in a way I've not really seen before. I can't quite explain it, but I think it's because he's not afraid to leave things ope ...more

This book was a little confusing, and some of the concepts are a little far-fetched. I'm hoping that the sequel will answer some questions and clear some things up.

Overall, it's a pretty good book... not GREAT, but not bad.

I read Illuminae (which I have been wanting to read FOREVER), shortly after I read this, and as I am writing the review for The Boy Who Spoke to Stars, I keep mixing the story up with bits and pieces of Illuminae. I don't want to compare the two, but if you like Illuminae, yo

Almost everybody has sat down beside a campfire at some point in their lives and shared an idea, a story, a longing, gazing up at a sweep of stars.

There's something about that setting, Something about the way it brings us together, huddling for warmth, while words and worlds spill out of us and mingle with the sparks and embers.

It was no different for me. That was where the first few fragile ideas
