A wealthy call girl is found dead. When Detective Inspector Coghill starts to investigate he is alerted from above that the case is politically sensitive and that his career could be in jeopardy if he continues. Soon he discovers that it is no longer his job that is at risk but his life. Clive Egleton is the author of fourteen previous novels including "The October Plot", "Seven Days to a Killing", "Troika" and "Picture of the Year".
Clive (Frederick William) Egleton was a British author of spy novels.
He enlisted in the Royal Armoured Corps in 1945 to train as a tank driver while still underage. He was subsequently commissioned into the South Staffordshire Regiment for whom he served in India, Hong Kong, Germany, Egypt, Cyprus, The Persian Gulf and East Africa. He retired in 1975 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
His novel Seven Days to a Killing was filmed as The Black Windmill, starring Michael Caine. Escape to Athena is a novelization of the 1979 movie of the same name.
A business woman is murdered and on investigation there is more money in her account than would seem possible from her legitimate dress agency business. It transpires that she was a prostitute catering for the sexual preferences of her wealthy clients.
Not satisfied with that she video tapes their activities and then blackmails them and when Detective Inspector Coghill gets involved he finds himself being restricted by others in higher positions than himself.
The story moves seamlessly from one scenario to another, from one protagonist to another and back again and they all come together in an exciting climax.
A well written intelligent thriller, a cross between a police procedural and a spy thriller. It's a bit dated since it was published back in 1983 and refers to Quadafi as an "austere" leader, something no one today would say about him. Clive Egleton died in 2006 after writing upwards of 30 thrillers, most of which I have read and enjoyed since they are based on his experiences in Intelligence and Counter-intelligence in Britain. They ring true.
