First-time visitors to the Louvre cannot help but be impressed by the sheer scope of the collections before them. This guide does not aim to cover absolutely everything, but to provide a comprehensive overview with a selection of nearly 600 masterpieces from Antiquity to the mid-19th century.
I loved this book. It reminded me of my visit to the museum almost five years ago. It literally guided me from room to room, from century to century, from culture to culture. I am very happy that I bought it then and I believe this is one of those books that will stay in my family for decades. The only part I didn't like was the last one, devoted to Oceania. There is no photo of the famous Moai from the Easter Islands, while there is so much to be said about them.
I've recently become obsessed with paintings, and the Louvre in particular. This is an excellent, thorough guide, well organized and full of vibrant color photographs of the pieces found in the museum. I wish I'd had it before visiting the Louvre, but it will be my greatest companion when I return, clutched tight in fist, full of markers for the paintings I most want to revisit.
A great guide and collection of no less then 600 masterpieces currently displayed in the Louvre. A must-have for first-time visitors of the Louvre, and a handy guide for the others. Could be used as a source of inspiration for artists.
Beautiful reference book about the treasures you can find in the Louvre. Can’t wait to be able to travel to Paris again and visit the museum to see these in person.
This book is a highlight of the various collections at the Louvre. It's divided into sections based on the country of origin and type of artwork. The photos of each work are pretty high quality, and there is text explaining the significance of each group.
This would have been great to have read BEFORE going to the museum, so I could have better appreciated what I was looking at. Still, better late than never!
The museum shop also had available a much more detailed catalog, that must have weighed 20 pounds. I didn't feel like transporting that one back, but it might be a good mail-order purchase.
Even if I never visit the Louvre, this guide is pretty cool to flip through and just take in the shear amount of historic paintings and sculptures of extremely fine quality. The descriptions of each painting are about a paragraph long, and wow can one learn much about the history of our kind just from reading those.. they wouldn't have that much info about the paintings at the actual louvre I'd wager. For people who are inspired to learn about history by looking at historical pictures and very little text, this is the book. Plus I like to be able to take in the art in the same fashion as many of the subjects in the paintings... half naked in my own place or at the beach :)
Nice overview of the whole collection, paintings and artefacts. If you want something more detailed on specific things, get something else. Otherwise good intro to each section of history and art movements.
