When a mysterious new rider arrives at Apley, Kaela and Trixie are immediately on the defensive. Not only is she dangerously talented, she insists on wearing expensive sunglasses whilst she rides. Who is this Sunglasses-Girl and why does she persist in pointing out Kaela and Trixie's flaws? It's down to Kaela to solve the puzzle of Angela May, and figure out a few things for herself along the way.

‘Made Powerful,’ the second book in the ‘Apley Towers’ series, revisits the characters of Kaela and Trixie and introduces a newcomer in the shape of the talented and enigmatic 15-year-old Angela. It follows on from the first book in that the old rivalry between Trixie and Bella resurfaces whilst a new rivalry begins when Angela throws Kaela’s teaching style into question.

The plot of this book centres around the scavenger hunt competition arranged between the 3 neighbouring riding schools in an attempt to attract business and boost attendance at all of the schools. It’s a story that explores what makes the characters fearless and powerful, (hence the title), whilst learning lessons in life along the way. The girls feel powerful and in control when riding their horse, jumping or performing dressage, whilst Angela learns that it’s not always best to offer advice or criticism unless invited.

We see how the mystery from the first book behind the strange disappearance of Kaela’s mum, Patricia, continues into this second book and how her legacy influences the path taken by both Trixie and Angela in the world of dressage.

Familiar and common themes re-emerge with which the teenage reader will identify. Kaela at one point feels threatened by the ‘new girl’ and a little jealous of Trixie’s riding ability. But central to the girls’ relationship is the importance of friendship. Theirs is a collection of ‘sisters’ with common interests who can admit others into their friendship circle and who support each other.

The world of the horse is the principal setting and the horse-lover will devour this series with gusto. Even if, like me, you have little knowledge of the equine world, there is still plenty to enjoy, because at its heart is an endearing story that is immensely readable and one which delivers powerful messages.

In the second book in the series, a new girl, Angela May, arrives at Apley Towers. Most of the riders, including Kaela and Trixie, see her as an unusual person with a lot of intriguing secrets. She has her own horses, Dawn and Fergie, a personal trainer, and she always wears expensive sunglasses while she rides. She is also dangerously talented.
At first Kaela can’t stand Angela’s bossy attitude and Trixie is jealous of her because she is very good at jumping, dressage, literally everything. However, throughout the story, the two girls get to spend more time with Angela and come to the conclusion that she is actually a very nice person. They realize they shouldn’t have judged Angela before properly meeting her.
