Forever Gentleman by Roland Colton is a historical fiction novel chronicling the fortunes, and misfortunes, of Nathan Sinclair. Nathan is a talented architect, and sometimes musician, living in London in the 1860s. Yet, all is not well for young Mr. Sinclair. He faces a debt thanks to a client who has been unable to pay, leaving him at the mercy of a loan broker. Still, Nathan does not despair, though he desperately seeks to pay off his debt. Then, while gi

I received this book as a LibraryThing Early Reviewer. Since others have given a good synopsis of what the book is about, I will just describe my impressions of the book. Going in, I was expecting something along the lines of a Jane Austen novel. And while there are indeed some echoes of Austen in the lively bantering between the characters, I felt the book resembled Dickens even more, in scope and plot. The main character, Nathan Sinclair, is a typical Dickens' nearly perfect hero, along the li ...more

I love the Victorian period of London history and Forever Gentleman had plenty of details from that era. I especially enjoyed the character of Nathan Sinclair who seemed to be a down-to-earth talented classical pianist. The author allows us to feel everything Nathan is going through as he experiences the life of high society while living in debt and poverty. The book is also very rich in historical detail of architecture and classical musical. The story had many twists and turns and held my inte ...more

My rating is 5 stars.
The first piece of information I found interesting was who the author is; he is a man of many talents and gifts. I believe his attention to detail as a classical pianist and attorney shaped his ability to tell a riveting story with such detail. I found it quite intriguing that the main character in the story is a male named Nathan Sinclair and readers will be able to see the hu

Forever Gentleman is a historical novel set in Victorian London and blends the author's love for architecture, music and history as it steeps its story in the sights, sounds, and flavors of the era and follows Renaissance man Nathan, whose struggles as an architect and a musician bring him in contact with the ladies and lords of high society.

Nathan's gifts bring him love in unexpected places; but they also are challenged by his economic misfortunes and by threats that give him clear choices betw

I received this as a Librarything Early Reviewer. While I have an interest in the period, "Forever Gentleman" isn't of a genre I would usually pick up. But I am happy I did receive a copy. The story is engaging and the author's attention to detail and description of the mid-Victorian era helps it to come alive. Although there are places when the scene setting runs on a little, and made me feel like I was reading a text book rather than a novel; these are infrequent and not overly distracting.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I had a problem with this book in having to stop for the translations, it interrupted the flow of the storyline. It's a very interesting and entertaining story, it's well written with complex characters and keeps you engaged. But Nathan is weak, spineless and not very smart. I was disappointed with the end of the story, but not everyone will be. ...more

Received this book from Library Thing through early review from Anaphora Literary Press. Absolutely loved it. There were a number of twists and turns during the story and a big plus, it was unpredictable. It represented trust, honesty and the depths of love. Life does not always turn out as planned.

A wonderful novel for lovers of classical music and historical fiction.

The story line here captured me so immensely, I lost track of time, and reality, on several occasions. I was quick to put the world on hold until I could finish the sentence I was reading. It’s terrible that some just don’t understand the power of a good book, and this is definitely one I recommend. I was reminded of several works of classical music that I’d forgotten years ago, and gifted the title of undiscovered melodic tr
