John Flynn helped to start the School of the Air and the Royal Flying Doctor Service and I never knew a lot about him until now. A very interesting man with an equally impressive life. More about him should be taught in our schools as a man who helped to open up the Australian Out back.
This book was given to me by a lovely lady in the RFDS.
I never took much notice of things like people on note money until I got this book. A fabulous story about the life of Rev. John Flynn. If we have ever heard the story of Martin Luther King jr, we know his famous line, "I have a dream!" Well, that can also be applied to the Rev. John Flynn, A Presbyterian minister who would drive all over the Outback in the early years of the 20th century, ministering to and assisting with those who needed ministry.
It was during his exploits that he came to realize that so many people in Outback properties and towns, were so intensely isolated from health care, which brought home to him the things that people suffer when there is no help available.
It all began when he heard about a young jackaroo on Ruby Downs Station in far northern Western Australia, the story of Jimmy Darcy. Jimmy had had a severe accident when his horse tripped and he flew over the horses head as he tried to head off stampeding cattle. Unfortunately for Jimmy, he got pummels by the cattle causing massive internal injuries and broken bones. His co-workers found him, carefully picked him up and as the only person with any medical knowledge or ability was Fred Tuckett, the postmaster at Halls Creek, 50 miles (80.4 kilometres) away. So they put young Jimmy on a dray and carried him the long torturous journey all the way to Halls Creek. (and the story continues but you will need to look it up because this young jackaroo's story was the initiative that Rev. Flynn needed to begin his Flying Doctor Service. The Presbyterian church refused to fund this dream but Flynn persisted.
At the very same time as Flynn was still doing his Australian Inland Mission to the people of the Out back, was a man by the name of Hudson Fysh, a returned pilot from WW1 who was just starting up his airline along with his friend Paul McGuinness to whom Fysh had also been the gunner for during the war. Flynn became great friends with Fysh and Fysh would lease out aircraft to Flynn's Flying Doctor Service, at a low rate. And this was how the RFDS came to be. Flynn's dream.
