Although yoga is increasingly popular as a source of spiritual and physical well being, few Christians know that it is also a unique way to worship God through the ancient practices and disciplines of body prayer. Nancy Roth's An Invitation to Christian Yoga offers an introduction to the practice of yoga as a Christian discipline of prayer, followed by simple poses and exercises that are clearly explained and helpfully illustrated by line drawings. Roth offers a short biblical text, often from the psalms, to accompany each pose as basis for meditation.
This book is ideal for beginners as well as more advanced practitioners who wish to incorporate yoga into their life of daily prayer.
I always wondered about incorporating my Faith in God into practicing Yoga. I always felt uneasy as a Christian during "sun salutations" in yoga classes I've attended, but also disagreed wholeheartedly with Christian groups who disapproved of practicing Yoga. Thus I continued pursuing Yoga practice and would pray during poses and medidation. THEN CAME THIS BOOK! It helped place matters into a better perspective and provided me with tools to strengthen and deepen my Faith and Practice. I especially like the recommended scripture with each presented pose (drawings help also, if you're new to yoga). I highly recommend this book! P.S: if you're not a Christian, I still recommend this book to keep an open mind (a MUST if you're a Yoga Instructor)!
This book was too simple for me. Read more like an introduction booklet. I have been practicing yoga off and on for 2 decades though, as well as I read books on yoga as often as possible. There are better books on yoga and the Christian faith.
This is a good place to start on a journey into Christian Yoga. The text is very readable and assumes the reader is just beginning a yoga practice. For those who are familiar with the mat it will allow you to see where the physical practice can be adapted to support the Christian spiritual journey.
